WASHINGTON: Asian Americans, both immigrants and those born in the United States, experience far fewer psychiatric disorders than any other group in the country, according to a new survey Thursday. University of Washington sociologist and survey lead author David Takeuchi said that less than a quarter of Asian Americans will experience mental health problems in their lifetime, compared with a national average of 48 percent for all people. Takeuchi said the study also showed that immigrants from Asia have lower rates of psychiatric problems than Asians born in the United States. The study, the first national epidemiological survey of Asian Americans, is part of a broader survey on mental health in the newest issue of the American Journal of Public Health. The research suggests that immigrants generally suffer a lower level of mental health problems than native born Americans, a summary said. But Takeuchi, whose team interviewed nearly 2,100 Asian Americans, said this groups difference was more marked. Compared to all Americans, Asian Americans had lower lifetime rates of any disorder, he said in the summary. He said that less than one-fourth of Asian immigrants will see any mental disorder. However, that wont necessarily be the case for their children and grandchildren. If trends continue, rates for them will go up and that suggests that more investment is needed for prevention programmes. afp
48 percent of people have mental health problems???? I am depressed just thinking about that statistic.
They are too busy doing their homework and working to be depressed, bi-polar, or any of that crap. Pfizer and Merck must hate them.
I would say that Asian cultures are generally among the most disciplined.
This not only accounts for their excellence in academics (which are called "disciplines"), but no doubt tends to make them wrapped tighter when it comes to mental health issues.
Asians as a rule, in my experience, have less mental health problems because they don't create them with excessive over-analysis of themselves, their lives, their mistakes and their problems - they address them directly or admit they are not addressing them directly, and then just get on with life without all the mental obsessions.
People who are rich and mostly idle (think of Hollywood or people who inherited great wealth) seem to have all kinds of neurotic problems. I think it is because they are spoiled and they don't know what real hardship is.
"48 percent of people have mental health problems???? I am depressed just thinking about that statistic."
Interesting. Isn't that about the same percentage of people who voted for Kerry?
What a coincidence...
They have self discipline, an excellent work ethic, and they don't whine.
very nice observeration.
1. Drink some wine singing "O Solo Mio".
2. Lose a War.
3. Make some spagetti using my tears as a seasoning.
I am so depressed I could just die.
I need to consult me, I and Myself, though before deciding what to do...
Sarcasm /off
Stronger social and family stigma inhibits reporting mental health problems or seeking help.
You're Italian? And you think the song is titled "O Solo Mio"? And you don't know how to spell "spaghetti"? No sarcasm needed.
I was typing very fast to get the message out. I am a forth generation Italian. But I am an American first. Race has absolutely no significance for me.
Asians, East Asians, Indians, are less likely to seek help for mental problems or depression. As they generally live within tightly knit family groups, they receive much support and often work through their presenting problems within.
I would also caveat that when any Asian presents with a truly diagnosible illness such as schizophrenia or even bi-polar, the family "physician" would be consulted.
Asians are not stupid - but life in more ordered family settings which keep out the stressors of what many individual western families seem to invite into their lives.
IMO of course - this is not pulled from an article or report study.
*YAWN!* Uh-hunh, and I love motherhood and apple pie, too. Now, did you have any substantive comment about the subject of the thread? Or have you finished now that you've let everybody know you're not a racist?
Interesting statistic. I wonder how many of them hold it all in until their heads explode! 'Course, they would be no statistics on that. What crap! I know a lot of people, and don't know a single depressed soul, or they are doing a Hell of a job of hiding it. Many of the younger people exclaim that they are 'bored'. Is that the same thing? As to higher IQ's as posted by one member, well.....,I just wish there was a test of common sense.
