Ga. senator's wife turns self in

ATLANTA - The Colombia-born wife of a Georgia state senator, who had been in hiding as federal immigration officials try to deport her, turned herself in Tuesday to face an order to remove her from the country.

Sascha Herrera, 28, arrived at the Martin Luther King Federal Building shortly before 8 a.m. to face authorities in the Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office.

"I'm very nervous right now," Herrera said. "I think I'm doing the right thing. I hope my name and my husband's name is clean."

Her husband, State Sen. Curt Thompson said, "The main goal is to make sure after the interview that they will allow Sascha to go home."

She had been in hiding since Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers arrived at her home Nov. 28 with an order to remove her from the U.S. She was not home at the time.

Her attorney, Charles Kuck, claims she was duped by a man handling her immigration requests and that she never received the immigration notices that triggered her deportation order.

Kuck filed a petition Monday to stay her deportation order and reopen her case, arguing that a man filed an asylum petition on her behalf without her knowledge and before her husband sponsored her green card application based on their April marriage.

real illegals

A significant number of illegal aliens (40%?) came here legally on a visa (typically a tourist visa) with the intent of violating the terms - either by overstaying the time limit or by working when work is prohibited for their particular visa class.

---She is in HIDING, or was for quite awhile. I have no respect for people who HIDE from the law! Are you aware that it costs us TAXPAYERS money to hunt lawbreakers down? ---

Meantime we're swimming in illegals in plain sight and some cities erect shelters where you can go to hire them!

This appears to be a clear case of bulling ahead after a bureaucratic snafu in order to 1)cover up the embarassment of the snafu and 2)cover up the broader embarassment of failing to go after the real problem.

This whole thing confuses me. I thought that if you married an american, you were allowed to live with them in the US indefinitely. Am I missing something?

You are if the paperwork gets approved after your marriage and you get permanent legal residency (as a result i.e., the vaunted green card). It's often easier for the alien to go back to her country after the marriage because it can take as little as six months to apply for and get a permanent residency visa. When you stay here after the marriage, it's a slightly tougher row to hoe because you have to convince USCIS that you didn't enter the country with the intent of getting married, that the marriage is legitimate, etc. (You always have to prove the marriage is legitimate, however.)

AP is true to form. Only in the tenth paragraph do they list the party affiliation of the Senator, in keeping with the DBM rule that, if it’s a Republican, you state that in the first sentence, if it is a Democrat, you bury that fact deep in the article.

My English mother married a US citizen..but she did not become a citizen just by marying him..she had to go to classes and she had to take a citizenship test..then she had to take an oath of citizenship. Where did you ever learn that citizens are automatic if they marry US citizens?
