State Sen. Glenn Grothman is trying to block the only sure path to racial diversity on University of Wisconsin campuses: namely, affirmative action. The West Bend Republican shouldn't be allowed to succeed.
Racial diversity is too important of a goal for the state to discard. Diversity enhances the educational environment, meets the legitimate needs of corporate America, bolsters the country's non-white middle class and narrows the nation's racial rift.
The UW campuses have too few students of color as it is. Outlawing affirmative action would thin their numbers even further.
Grothman formed a special committee to explore barring affirmative action in UW admissions and in state contracting. That committee held a well-attended hearing this week. The nation's most noted foe of the corrective policy - Ward Connerly, a former University of California regent - spoke.
Connerly did agree

Skin color should be meaningless and any distinction by government based on on it shouold be banned.
Diversity is the iron and clay of the statue's feet..........
--and the ultimate aim of "diversity" is a heel on the neck of "majority" males---
Does anyone realize what a sham "diversity" is? It does no good. It costs untold millions of tax dollars. Many of the "diverse" are out to slit our throats at their earliest convenience; the remainder of them are here to take over and make a perfect hell of our country just as they did in their own before they left.
There's gonna be hell to pay when guys finally get tired of being patsies.......
and leads to the hiring and promotion of incompetents and the lowering of academic standards.
Guess that was an editing problem that caused those few critical phrases to be left out. ;-)
the only sure path to racial diversity
that's just a terrible thing to say
Translation: the only way those dumb blacks can make it is with special consideration. If the author said it that way he'd be one of the few honest liberals. They really believe that crap, too.
If I were a black in WI I'd be compelled to attack that attitude, verbally and maybe even physically. Yet you NEVER hear it from the black "leadership", only from outsuders like Cosby and Walter E. williams.
Outsiders, of course!
Hence my tagline.
enhances the educational environment,
Diversity achieved naturally does that because it increases the marketplace of ideas, but affirmative action degrades it by driving excellence out in favor of the lowest common denominator.
meets the legitimate needs of corporate America,
In some cases that is true, but in the case of affirmative action, it is merely a burden upon lower-level white male employees, who are not responsible for any past discrimination by the corporations..
bolsters the country's non-white middle class
Yes, and that's a good thing. But once again, he's forgetting that Diversity is an admirable goal, but racial preferences are probably not the best way to achieve it, and come with an unreasonable burden in the form of "reverse discrimination".
and narrows the nation's racial rift.
Which is another good thing, but all things have their place and time. Affirmative action has had its' chance. It has worked to some degree, but it's like the difference between civil-war era medical care and modern laser surgery.
We now have a well-educated black middle class who have thrown off the shackles of Jim Crow-ism and a leftwing-imposed sense of entitlement through assumed inferiority, and now it is their turn to raise their children to respect the opportunities they have, rather than allowing them to reject the middle-class values that their parents worked hard to provide them.
LOL! What needs do corporate America have for "diversity"? To stay out of trouble with the EEOC? To give in to Jesse Jackson's blackmail?
And since when do liberals care about the "needs of corporate America"? That's just too much..
What a racist statement! This is saying that minorities are incapable of high achievement. The only sure path is to improve primary education. Higher ed. should be colorblind and based on merit.
There are two possible rationales for affirmative action: either that the beneficiaries are incapable of making it on their own without help, or that white males are hopelessly racist and will always favor other white males unless forced by affirmative action to do otherwise. The proponents of affirmative action would probably say that reason #2 is why they favor it.
If a qualified student applies to UW, won't they be accepted? How would the loss of affirmative action reduce the number of minorities, unless the minorities are not fully qualified to be there in the first place? Will minorities stop applying to UW if there is no AA guarantee or is the administration racist to begin with and would use the loss of AA to not admit many minorities? Inquiring minds want to know.
At least the left-wing rag admits it.
But not by lifting others up, by bringing all down.
The value of a person is in their ability and in their soul. Skin color is, and ought to be rendered utterly meaningless as a measure of a person's worth. That is what the Civil Rights movement was about, before it was perverted by utopian socialists seeking to substitute outcome for opportunity. To deny the primacy of human ability and replace it with a quota system based on external pigmentation is to deny the very concept of value.
The covert purpose of this scheme was to obtain and wield power otherwise unobtainable through economic activity or the political process, and "affirmative action" was the plan by which it was advanced. Regrettably, the plan succeeded, even while its supposed beneficiaries suffer from poor achievement, broken families, drug addiction, and cultural malaise. All of which are blamed on "racism" - a perpetual bogeymen intended to stifle dissent and maintain the status quo, regardless of manifest failure.
