Like light displays and an onslaught of catalogs, controversy over Christmas has become a December tradition. Whether its Christmas trees removed from government buildings, Santa Claus expelled from public schools, or retail employees wishing customers Happy Holidays rather than Merry Christmas, debates rage about whether to celebrate the Christian holiday Christmas or the secular (and politically correct) Christmas season. Politicians and governments have two strategies for ducking this controversy they can hide behind claims that anything vaguely religious is out-of-bounds, or take the multicultural path of incorporating every imaginable faith into holiday expressions. Private entities have tougher calculation to make. In our easily offended society, mass marketers teeter between angering secularist with explicitly religious trappings and alienating Christians by neutering Christmas of its religious significance.
In the private sphere, individuals have an outlet for their grievances. Consumers can vote with their dollars, patronizing stores and corporations that reflect their values and shunning those that dont. When Target the nations second largest retailer decided not to allow the Salvation Army (a Christian aid group) to solicit donations in front of their stores, many customers condemned the decision and pledged not to shop there this season. In fact, according to MSNBC, five thousand clergy members encouraged churchgoers to boycott Target because of this decision, which one pastor characterized as an attack against American tradition.

They can try and chase Jesus Christ away from the world but they can NEVER chase Him out of our hearts - He is there to stay forever!
Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
For nothing shall separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord!
Most of this is so silly it borders on fanaticism. But I am reminded of the current blizzard in Denver. In 1982, a blizzard came in on the evening of the 23d, into the 24th and left 2 1/2 feet of snow. It was referred to as the Christmas Blizzard of '82. This morning I noticed Fox referred to the current blizzard as the Holiday Blizzard of 2006.
Merry Christmas
DH and I met for lunch yesterday at a very nice restaurant in DC. Our waiter wished us a Merry Christmas so I increased his tip.
I have actually noticed more and more stores ARE open on Christmas day. I remember it used to be like a ghost town outside on the 25th, one year I needed eggs or something, had to drive to a 7-11. Not anymore.
>>>Here's my $0.02 worth: For all these stores that want us to spend our dollars shopping for Christmas gifts in their stores (but they will refer to it as "holiday" shopping), yet they don't want to offend the adherents of other religions by mentioning "Christmas", I have two questions: Will your store be open on December 25?
And here's my $0.02 worth. Why do people spend the entire Advent Season complaining about hearing Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas, but then spend most of the Christmas Season wishing each other Happy New Year?
A Hope Filled Advent to you all!
Who are these people? I haven't wished anyone that nor heard it from a single person yet.

That is because we have not yet entered the Christmas Season (12 days from Christmas to Epiphany). But I'll bet that come December 27th, most folks will be wishing each other Happy New Year and not Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas.
As a frumie(Orthodox Jew) I find the war on Christmas disgusting. I make it a point to say Merry Christmas to gentiles-who always looked stunned- I guess they think relgious Jews are just like ACLU JINO'S.
Chanukah is over sundown Saturday night. Can people then freely say Merry Christmas
