If human life has no absolute value, then the issue of who lives and who dies is decided by arbitrary criteria. The protection of both the law and the courts are withdrawn from the helpless among us as it happened in Nazi Germany. In Florida, Terri Schiavo's state-sanctioned murder is a forewarning of what we can expect if a situational ethic of human life becomes institutionalized in our country. As George Santayana reminded us, those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it.

"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
