The Republic of Northern America (BARF ALERT!)
The Toronto Star ^ | December 26, 2006 | Shephane Kelly

Posted on 12/26/2006 6:31:14 AM PST by rasblue

Disenchantment and growing irritation with the U.S. South could lead northern American states to seek a union with Canadian provinces, writes Stéphane Kelly

In 1891, the intellectual Goldwin Smith caused a furor when he published Canada and the Canadian Question. He suggested that if Canadians believed in the democratic ideal, they must accept the inevitable: Annexation of Canada by the American republic.

The writer noted that the divide created by the English Civil War, which pitted Puritans against Cavaliers, had replicated itself in North America. Canadians embraced the aristocratic ideal of the Cavaliers while Americans held dear the democratic ideal of the Puritans.

Who would have thought that roles would have reversed themselves a century later? That the United States would be seen as a society with an affinity for aristocratic values while Canada would be perceived as an alternative model, because of its attachment to democratic values?

This reversal could change the political landscape of North America.

American society's slide toward the aristocratic ideal risks exacerbating the anger of the northern states, and possibly convincing them to leave the union.

In this context, among the political possibilities that face Canadians in 2020, it would not be far-fetched to include political integration with New England.

If Quebec were a separate country, all the French people who didn't want to become Muslim could move there.

You are absolutely right. But don't worry, Kim Jung-Il will solve that problem in about 2010, when he vaporizes ten or fifteen urban centers. Assuming of course that the 'Rats cut funding for missile defense.

I wouldn't wish our know-it-all Puritan descendants on Canadians. Look before you leap. They have to be in charge.

I remember reading an article about ten years ago that said Quebec would secede and the poor (as in no money) Atlantic provinces would have to join the US to survive. I still see this as a more likely event. I think most American's no matter how red or blue still see themselves as American's first. (Except for the #$%^heads that go to Canada every time they lose an election, Good Ridance!)

"American society's slide toward the aristocratic ideal risks exacerbating the anger of the northern states, and possibly convincing them to leave the union."

Umm, most of the so called aristocrats (folks like John Kerry, etc) LIVE in northern states like Massachusetts & Connecticut.

Many Canadians descend from the very same Puritans, their problem is they picked the wrong side during the Revolution and were booted out of New England.

The "disenchantment" of other (paerticularly northeastern) states with the South is not a new occurrence. As early as the 1820's, New England openly discussed secession from the Union -- to rid itself of the backward, low-brow sodbusters in the southern states.

In the 1861's, the South decided they'd had enough of Northern "do-goodisms," and decided they'd save some Yankees the trouble of seceding -- the South went ahead and DID. (Yes, yes, I know -- The South lost the War, Slavery was a big issue, the Southern Cause in itself was not a perfect vehicle to preserve the Constitution and Liberty, etc. etc...) The point is, when the North was confronted with actually losing the South, they spared NO expense to keep them in line, and under the boothill, of a central government in Washington.

Why? Several reasons. Then, the agricultural base of the nation was the south. The Raw materials were in the South. the Industrial complex in the North NEEDED those raw materials to feed their economic machine. They also needed the vast and growing tax base in the South to fund the centralization and deconstitutionalization of the nation. So, they simply took it.

Fast forward to today, and the South in the last generation or so has reasserted itself in the political lofe of the nation. The South is far more religious, far less "tolerant" of, oh, lawbreakers, deviants, enemies of the state, terrorists, etc. They no longer put up with as much of the political free-for-all that has been foisted upon the nation in the last 150 years -- particularly since the 1960's.

So, the "Yankee Do-gooders" are desparately searching for another stooge -- more raw materials to exploit, more social causes to champion, more special interests to fund. What place would be more amenable to their philosophy than Canada?

I for one would GLADLY approve of any succession of the Northern states from the USA. They may go independent, they may hook up with Canada -- for all I care they could be honest and align with the ChiComs or Russia -- or even Iran. Some of them have more in common with the Radical Islamists than they do with their countrymen in the South.

In any case, this kind of idea is one some of us in the South have favored for over a century-and-a-half. If it catches on in the North, more power to 'em! Here's your hat, what's your hurry?? A word of warning to the poor, unsuspecting Canadians though -- should the day ever come that you actually wed yourself to your lovely New England bride, don't expect the honeymoon to last long -- and expect to pay far more to keep her than you ever imagined.

"I really wouldn't mind to give Canada some of those liberal blue hellholes in exchange with those Canadian parts which voted Harper."

You'd basically end up with an east-west division, except for the 'left coast' in both countries, and Ontario- Michigan would become an Islamic country.

The poor Atlantic provinces would be a fine addition to poor east coast states, and a never ending democrat stronghold, because the sheeple will always be voting for promises of "free" stuff that never comes.

HA! Expect Canadians to pay MORE? Never happen. They are already in the 70-90% tax range.(those that aren't on welfare that is) There isn't much more they can pay, and eastern Canada would probably have even less to pay with if they loose the auto plants as a result of any such division.

More "chicken little" propaganda from the left in Canada. The socilaist liberal mooonbats now begin a propaganda campaign designed to truncate the new Conservative government and its associated culture in Canada.

The press of Canada seeks to strike fear into the hearts of the Canadian electorate, to vote againsts economic ties with the USA. Gun control and prohibition, feminism, seperatism of Quebec, are just a few odf the fear mongering issues that will be injected into the Canadian public.

Candians should pi$$ on their leftist media, and laugh them into perdition.

THe Northern tier of states in the US will not give up the South, that issue has already been decided. The only folks down here who would want to be part of Canada are from the liberal moonbat left, who think that their freedoms come from a toke tube.
