GSPC now AQM

For the record, the GSPC made quite clear that they had signed up with the global jihad back in 2004, when their Emir at the time issued a video statement titled "A word that has to be said". The Emir in question was killed in battle about a month later.

Much more recently, the current GSPC made a big show of officially signing on with al-Qaida, and as though to say they really mean it this time they have dropped their former name

Al-Jamaah al-Salafiyyah lil-Dawah wal-Qital
Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat
and replaced it with a new name which they claim they chose in direct consultation with dear old Osama bin Laden himself

Tanzeem al-Qaida [fi] Bilad al-Maghreb al-Islami
al-Qaida Organization in the land of the Islamic Maghreb
Who wants to be the one to tell OBL that we're going to dispense with the flowery bits and just call his band of thugs AQM (al-Qaida Maghreb)?

You can read the Arabic source here, or download this Word .doc the brothers were kind enough to provide.

Sydney Airport evacuated after breach
January 28, 2007

Passengers have been allowed back into Sydney Airport's T2 domestic terminal after a mass evacuation triggered by a security breach. Hundreds of passengers were sent back through security after a man reportedly barged past staff at the departures' X-ray point for passengers and hand luggage. He disappeared into the secure area of the terminal and an extensive search failed to find any trace of him.

After about two hours passengers were allowed back into the cleared departure area to board flights which had been suspended. "The rescreening of the evacuated passengers through the security checkpoints has been completed," a Sydney Airport Corporation (SAC) spokesman said.

The SAC said in a statement a passenger had breached security screening around 6.40pm (AEDT) at the T2 terminal. "The breach of security screening meant an individual passenger could have had a potentially suspicious item in the carry-on luggage," it said. "Attempts to locate the individual were unsuccessful.

Bomb Kills 15 Near Peshawar Mosque
Jan 28, 2007

A suicide bombing near a Shiite mosque in Pakistan killed at least 15 people Saturday, including the Peshawar police chief. Investigators said the bomber set off a suicide belt when police prevented him from entering a religious procession, the Daily Times of Pakistan reported. About 60 people were hurt.

Six of the dead were police officers. They included the chief, Malik Saad, and his deputy. Officials said both Shiites and Sunnis were killed in the blast. No one has claimed responsibility for the bombing, but authorities do not believe it was related to sectarian conflict.

Arabian ministers escape a bomb explodes at a Thai southern Islamic college
January 29, 2007

A bomb was detonated near an Islamic college in Thailand's southern province Pattani Sunday morning shortly after a group of ministers from Arab countries visited the college, Thailand's news network The Nation reported.

Police said the bomb hidden inside a construction site at the mouth of the road leading to the Yala Islamic College (Pattani campus) in Yarang district, Pattani province was detonated at 10 a. m. Sunday, the report on The Nation's English news website said. Three border patrol policemen were slightly injured by the bomb.

The bomb exploded just 15 minutes after the visiting Islamic affairs ministers from Qatar, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia, accompanied by Thai Interior Minister Aree Wongaraya, finished the visit at the campus.

Diggers upgrade fight against Islamist terrorism
January 29, 2007

AUSTRALIA will send troops to strife-torn central Mindanao in the southern Philippines under a landmark defence agreement designed to upgrade Canberra's role in the regional fight against Islamist terrorism.

As US-backed Philippines forces close in on Bali bombers and Jemaah Islamiah kingpins Dulmatin and Omar Patek, on southern Jolo island, Australian defence forces are planning military exercises with their Philippines counterparts in the Mindanao heartland of local and foreign al-Qaeda-linked terrorists.

Major-General Nehemias Pajarito, commander of the Philippine army's 6th infantry division, said he would meet with Australian ambassador to The Philippines Tony Hely and his defence attache Chris Burns tomorrow at military headquarters outside Cotabato City to discuss the details of the escalated defence co-operation program. Talks would centre on how the forces, in their joint exercises, would monitor al-Qaeda-linked terror cells and training camps.

Call to gag Muslim radicals (Australia)
January 29, 2007

NSW Jewish leaders want the state's anti-vilification laws applied to a radical Muslim group that has sparked outrage by bringing to Australia its call for an Islamic superstate. But they have stopped short of joining the Federal Opposition and NSW Government in demanding an outright ban on the extremist group, Hizb ut-Tahrir, a move that Prime Minister John Howard today reiterated that cannot occur until it is proven that anti-terrorism laws have been broken.

Indonesian cleric Ismail Yusanto yesterday outlined his vision for an Islamic utopia before a crowd of about 500 Muslims at Lakemba, in Sydney's south-west. Dr Yusanto and fellow members of Hizb ut-Tahrir said it could ease suffering around the world by creating an Islamic superstate - ruled by Sharia law - through jihad, or holy war.

The NSW Jewish Board of Deputies CEO Vic Alhadeff today said Hizb ut-Tahrir's language - particularly in relation to Jews - overstepped the legal mark. But it was up to the authorities whether an outright ban should be slapped on the group. "Any ban is a matter for the Government to make a decision," Mr Alhadeff said. "

Young, British Muslims 'getting more radical'
29/01/2007

A bleak picture of a generation of young British Muslims radicalised by anti-Western views and misplaced multicultural policies is shown in a survey published today. The study found disturbing evidence of young Muslims adopting more fundamentalist beliefs on key social and political issues than their parents or grandparents.

Forty per cent of Muslims between the ages of 16 and 24 said they would prefer to live under sharia law in Britain, a legal system based on the teachings of the Koran. The figure among over-55s, in contrast, was only 17 per cent. In some countries, people found guilty under sharia law face penalties such as beheading, stoning, the severing of a hand or being lashed.

The study, by the Right-wing think-tank Policy Exchange, also found a significant minority who expressed backing for Islamic terrorism. One in eight young Muslims said they admired groups such as al-Qa'eda that "are prepared to fight the West".

Yemeni Jews flee Islamist threat
Sunday, 28 January 2007

Forty-five Jewish people in Yemen have taken refuge in a hotel in northern Yemen after receiving death threats from Muslim extremists. The group fled their village 10 days ago when they were confronted by masked radical Islamist gunmen.

The minority community has followed a traditional way of life in the village of Salem for centuries. But, earlier this month, the Salem Jews received a letter accusing them of spreading vice and corruption. The message was clear - the Jews must leave the country or lose their lives.

"Body Found in Airplane Wheel Well at LAX"
Jan 29th - 12:54am

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "LOS ANGELES (AP) - The body of a male stowaway was found Sunday in the wheel well of a British Airways jet at Los Angeles International Airport, officials said.

A pilot discovered the body of the young man in the front right wheel well of the 747-400 during a routine inspection shortly before it was to return to London, airport spokeswoman Nancy Castles said.

The FBI determined the stowaway likely died in the wheel well, Castles said. Autopsy results won't be available until later this week. Authorities had not identified the victim late Sunday.

The aircraft, British Airways Flight 283, had arrived from London Heathrow Airport at 3:15 p.m. and was scheduled to depart at 5:20 p.m. The airline notified officials of the discovery just before 4:30 p.m., Castles said."

The source said that they would release further details shortly. (Ali Waked)
