Gas Smelled Over Large Area Of Manhattan
WNBC ^ | 1-8-06 | WNBC

YORK -- People all over a large part of New York City are smelling a gas, and it's not clear where it's coming from.

Numerous people have called 911 concerned about the odor. Con Edison, the Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard are investigating.

PATH service has been suspended into the 33rd Street station. Service is still going into the World Trade Center station.

Macy's department store has been evacuated, according to reports.

There also are unconfirmed reports of a similar smell across the river in New Jersey.

People between Midtown and Battery Park are reported to be smelling it. At NBC headquarters in Rockefeller Plaza, the odor is very strong. One person who works on the sixth floor at 30 Rockefeller Center says it's so strong people are leaving the building.

At one major office building at 37th and 7th, employees have been told that Con Edison is looking into a smell, and they should remain inside until they hear otherwise.

Mayor Bloomberg is expected to be asked about it at a 9:30 briefing with the media.

LOL.....very unsexy to talk about an inversion. Better to wink wink about terror, not terror.

Feh!

Our rural area has had jet fuel dumped on us in the past so I'm wondering if that contributed to the odors that cannot dissipate due to the weather and the rain.

Yeah, but that is not the case. The smell is wide spread, and all the dangerous gasses used in warfare do not have a smell, except for Mustard gas. Since there is not a single report of anyone succumbing to the smell, the entire episode is unwarranted.

Fox said it's the weather.

No need to worry with the Democrats in charge. They'll protect us ;)

At least we were spared the usual 50 "series" and "hugh" comments this time around.

The folks on Today this AM made a crack about the Christmas tree and "it's beginning to smell".

I suppose their brains registered something - only they just couldn't figure out what.

Of all the various Universities and Chemical companies in NY, could no one take a gas chromatograph sample and tell what it is?

And everyone believes they're sooooo original.

"The timing of this smell is suspicious, coming right after the 'rat takeover of Capitol Hill!"

It's George W. Bush's fault!

John Kerry and John Edwards have a plan to stop all bad odors in New York.

This is- as long as it's nothing serious- really hilarious. New Jersey says it's Manhattan...Manhattan says it's Jersey.

The cops says it's not serious- but won't say what IT is.

I'm thinking it's time for Ghostbusters theme music..

"I wouldn't be surprised it isn't our govt, doing a test to see how far a gas could go and how quick"

yes, that sort of study is done all the time. usually you use sulfur hexafluoride, which is oderless; SF6 shows up big time if you use an electron capture detector. You can see ppb pretty easily.

Dispersion studies are done by blowing SF6 up a stack and then detecting the plume with a few vans or cars equipped with ECDs.

They've done studies with P. Globii bacteria, too.

But there would be no need to do it with a stink, though it may be cheaper to log 911 calls to mark the moving front!

This is the usual first-of-the-month release of mind-control gas over Manhattan - keeps the Dem voter rolls filled.

They just overdid the dose this time around.
