Our daughter just called from San Luis Obispo to pass along the "good" news, LOL. If I'd been freeping I'd have known already. Our last tsunami generated a bit of boat damage in the harbors but nothing too bad. We had a full-blown warning, sirens and all, a few days after we arrived here in 1994. I think a 6-inch wave was generated (how do they measure something like that when most of the waves are higher than that?) Most folk here live well away from the inundation zones.

Time Warner Cable's Weather Channel - 46 - in San Diego.

They are stating (as recently as 5 mins ago), that there is NO - REPEAT NO watch or warning is in effect for the West Coast. A destructive Tsunami is not expected.

That's all I know.

Thing to remember about Tsunamis is they don't spread equally in all directions - you basically get two "beams" extending perpendicular to the fault...

Which is why the Tsunami from the last Kuril quake was higher in Crescent City CA than it was in Japan.

It is best not to make generalizations like that about such a dangerous event. While what you have described has occurred before, it is really only applicable to great thrust earthquakes and even then all that you are technically saying is that the non-lateral waves to the line of the fault (which still do exist) are small *relative* to the lateral waves. Add in geography and your entire theory goes to heck. For example as I discussed above, Hilo, Hawaii and parts of Japan were devastated in 1960 while your theory would suggest that they would be some of the areas least affected. Here is a graphic that I linked earlier that shows better what both you and I are talking about for the Great Earthquake of 2004.

A Tsunami Warning is in effect which includes the Alaska coastal areas from Sand Point, Alaska to Attu, Alaska.

A Tsunami Watch is in effect for the British Columbia and Alaska coastal areas from the north tip of Vancouver I., British Columbia to Sand Point, Alaska.

This message is advisory only for other areas of California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia.

A Tsunami Warning means that all coastal residents in the warning area who are near the beach or in low-lying regions should move immediately inland to higher ground and away from all harbors and inlets including those sheltered directly from the sea. Those feeling the earth shake, seeing unusual wave action, or the water level rising or receding may have only a few minutes before the tsunami arrival and should evacuate immediately. Homes and small buildings are not designed to withstand tsunami impacts. Do not stay in these structures.

All residents within the warned area should be alert for instructions broadcast from their local civil authorities. A tsunami has been recorded.

A Tsunami Watch means that all coastal residents in the watch area should prepare for possible evacuation. A tsunami watch is issued to areas which will not be impacted by the tsunami for at least three hours. Watch areas will either be upgraded to warning status or canceled.

At 8:24 PM Pacific Standard Time on January 12, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 8.2 occurred east of the Kuril Islands, Russia. This earthquake has generated a tsunami. The waves are expected to first reach Shemya, Alaska at 9:35 PM AKST on January 12. Estimated tsunami arrival times and maps along with safety rules and other information can be found on the WCATWC web site.

A tsunami has been generated which could cause damage to the warned area. Expected wave heights are such that danger is limited to those in or near the waterfront. An extreme inundation is not expected in the states and provinces listed above.

A tsunami has been observed at the following sites:
Hanasaki Japan 0.1m/0.3ft
Wave observations are the amplitude above sea level.

[On the same site it had another place in Japan where peak to trough height of tsunami wave was about 6 feet!]

The lateral beams expand in width with distance and the length of fault rupture in the Chile quake was exceedingly long.

You have local amplification effects in places like Crescent City from the topography of the bottom as well, of course.

My main point is people shouldn't be making judgements of the size of any possible tsunami from tide stations on Hokkaido, which are oriented along the fault itself in the same way as Bangladesh (which saw basically no tsunami at all) was to the 2004 Sumatran quake.
