Ironically though, they also have some interesting contradictions to that...like the time Jack is torturing a guy and he decides the suspect has no more information because he "sees it in his eyes",I saw that scene as showing that Jack had lost his edge after being tortured in a Chinese prison for two years, and that had affected his ability to do what needed to be done. (cough)MCCAIN!(cough)

That's how I saw it as well....and then later on he does do what's needed by offing Curtis (much to his own personal terror over it).

There's nothing like a mushroom cloud rising over Valencia to hone that edge again, judging by the last thing Jack says.
To me, good buddy Achmed and his betrayal of his American friends was what the show was all about.
