The reference would have been to Larry Niven's Bandersnatchii, who were not particularly frumious, but were sentient.
They had been created by a race of extremely clever "people" called, if I remember correctly, Tnuctipun.
These Tnuctipun had been enslaved for centuries by a race of beings with powerful telepathic minds. The Bandersnatchii were but one weapon in the collossal struggle to overturn the slavemasters.

I suppose if you are going to plagiarize, do it to someone who's dead and can't fight back. ;-) Or was this Larry's version of an homage to Lewis? Larry didn't have Jubjub birds too did he?

a race of extremely clever "people" called, if I remember correctly, Tnuctipun. Yup. Didn't they create the stage trees also?

Just a bunch of Larry Niven fans...
The "stage trees" were a bit imaginative. When they matured they became essentially solid-fuel rockets.

Good point. Roger Zelazny did a scene where a forest of petroleum-producing trees caught fire.

Iirc, they had automatic fire control systems engineered in, so it didn't go up in flames like the perp hoped.
