A Dictatorship Rises (Tropical Hitler)
Investor's Business Daily ^ | 22 Jan 2007 | Editorial staff

Latin America: Hugo Chavez's confiscations of U.S. properties are bad enough. But they're overshadowed by his bolder move to turn Venezuela into a dictatorship and put the entire region in peril.

Chavez's declaration last week that he'll suspend Venezuela's constitution and congress for 18 months and rule by decree will turn Venezuela into a dictatorship. Checks and balances of democratic power sharing will end, and anyone who thinks Chavez will voluntarily return to democracy is a wishful thinker.

Chavez openly calls himself a communist and has ambitious plans to expropriate even more businesses, farms and buildings. He's giving himself carte blanche to meddle with the food supply and will create shortages. He intends to bulk up the military to intimidate his neighbors. That heralds a whole new level of trouble for the region because it's unlikely to stop at Venezuela.

The consolidation parallels how another democratically elected leader, Adolf Hitler, seized power in Germany's weak democracy. It also vindicates the much-derided observations of Donald Rumsfeld, who first compared Chavez to Hitler last year.

Chavez isn't even trying to conceal the similarities. He called his move to rule by decree the "Enabling" Act, the same term Hitler used. Yet, as in the years preceding Hitler's rise to absolute power, no one seems to notice a problem.

He's in a dreamland. He isn't isolated as Castro is on his island paradise, and he can't keep out or in for that matter border altercations, nor can he play Khmer Rouge with impunity. China may have advisers in there, and Iran may be playing kissy, and I don't discount the problem especially with this fruitcake inviting ME terrorists into Venezuela, but he's two smart by half.

What you have is a fat little troglodyte with delusions of grandeur if not godhood whose economic lifeline is being dismantled and I don't give him two years before his own people Saddamize him..

Maybe in the past you would be correct.

If the people you mention "could" have taken him out, they would have.

Problem is that he controls EVERY facet of the military and has thoroughly cleansed or defanged the police that is still not within his control.

Want to see real trouble brew?

Have oil drop to sub $50 levels for six months and the economy and the hand outs will dry up...then you will see things happen.

Chavez keeps his people loyal with a combination of good old fashioned bribery and if that does not work, force.

Such is to be expected of a communist coupster.

Ironically, the main issue that he rose to power on, the gasoline subsidy...he is now on the same side of the president that he replaced on the matter.

"Connecticut Sen. Christopher Dodd, for example, justifies any autocratic action out of Venezuela with the watery "yes-but" pablum that "Chavez was elected democratically."

Good old Dodd, never met a Marxist lunatic he didn't like.

Does Chavez consider Hitler to be good, or bad?

Chavez said he plans to file a bill in Parliament that will grant him absolute authority to seize capitalist property “for the benefit of the state.” Called the “Enabling Act,” Chavez’s bill is modeled on a similarly named 1933 German measure. The Act will enable Chavez to enact laws without the participation of the Parliament.

He's asshat buddies with Ahmadinejad. You can just guess what the two of them think of Hitler together. I had always thought of Chavez as a tropical mussolini or a tropical stalin. The fact is, Hitler is his closest model and we've got a Hitler problem.

Sadly, the entire South American continent is headed in the direction of Venezuela. It is unreal. Chavis has sympathizers in the governments of Bolivia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, and now Peru. The only real ally we have on the continent is the government of Columbia and that most likely will fall by the end of this administration. Under this Bush administration we will see more socialist regimes than existed under Carter.

Unfortunately he has become a laughingstock thoughout the entire continent with his total inability to lead this nation. They and most of the world now view him and this nation as a whole with contempt knowing that he is a paper tiger and appears to them to be a fool. I am not sure he is a fool but he comes across that way to millions here and abroad. As bad as the next administration is likely to be, at least I will not have to admit I voted for those democrats that will govern for the next 4 to 8 years.
