The breakaway British region of Scotland could be among the beneficiaries of this week's expected UN recommendation that Kosovo be granted provisional independence from Serbia, leading in time to full sovereign status. If the plan backed by the US, Britain and Germany is formally accepted by the UN security council, it will be taken as an important international legal precedent by would-be separatist movements from Georgia to Moldova to Chechnya, and possibly also the Scottish National party.
Martti Ahtisaari, a former Finnish president who is the UN's point man on Kosovo, will put forward his proposals on Friday, when he meets the Kosovo contact group in Vienna. If he follows the expected script and backs independence, the implications will be explosive not only for Serbia but for EU unity and Russia's touchy relations with the west.
Kosovo has been part of Serbia since the Middle Ages. By comparison, the Act of Union binding Scotland and England dates back a mere 300 years, to 1707. Serbs view Kosovo as integral to their history and nationhood. Most are adamantly opposed to a breakup, as shown by nationalist success in Sunday's election. But opinion polls suggest many English voters view the prospect of Scotland's secession with equanimity.
In contrast, Europe is facing the contested, potentially violent separation of Orthodox Christian Serbia from a 90% ethnic Albanian, Muslim southern province which, despite ongoing tensions, remains home to a significant, stubborn ethnic Serb minority. If in such unpromising circumstances Kosovo can gain the UN's blessing, self-determination and self-rule may become the new boom business for minorities everywhere - and the dismemberment of nations, rather than their unification, a new UN pastime.

This is a wrong analogy. Scotland and England are separate and distinct nations. Kosovo is a core Serbian land in which Albanian Muslims became a majority.
The proper analogy would be English "equanimity" toward giving Yorkshire to new Muslim state on the grounds of changed demographics.
or Americans giving up New England coast and Virginia.
or Poles giving up Cracow
or Germans giving up Rhineland
or Japanese giving up Kyoto
etc ...
The UN is pushing war onto Europe. Serbia won't go quietly into the night.
Why the h**l are we, Britain and Germany still backing independence for Kosovo? Don't Bush, Blair and Merkel know that full independence for Kosovo isn't a very good idea to say the least? In our case, is it a result of leaving the Clintonistas in power in the State Department?
The population of Kosovo had been overwhelmingly Orthodox Catholic Serbians ( 250,000 ) prior to the Clinton backed KLA drug lords forced them ( and another 100,000 Serb minorities ) out of Kosovo.
The KLA muslims proceeded to desecrate and demolish historical Christian churches, monasteries and shrines in their wake; all thanks to the total military support of our military might.
That rapist who dared to stain the Oval Office by way of his adulterous and degenerate sexual cravings, William Jefferson Clinton, led his gang of war criminals in an ethnic and religious cleansing - in favor of muslims - in what is now and has always been, and will always be Serbian Kosovo.
I pray this man will earnestly seek His forgiveness, and the forgiveness of those he injured in this life, before his last days in this temporal existence.
Implications all over the place...what a Pandora's Box this stupid move (hopefully it will not happen) would be.
I can just see it in about 15 years: the newly formed republic of Aztlan (encompassing parts of California, New Mexico and Arizona).
Some encouraging news from Europe!:
media is awfully quiet about the dropped paragraph 4 from the resolution. no biggie?
Yeah, just what the world needs- more countries. As if 200+ aren't enough.
Media always shuts up about their failures. They are trying to pretend that it doesn't matter. They are rooting for the Albanians to get what they want in the EU and ultimately the UN.
you would think it's news worthy (with a doze of sensational) just by the mere fact that eurocrats dropped the "independence" paragraph from the resolution, prepared and heavily lobbied by british lord johnston, simply based on serbian delegation's arguments???
oh my, were eurocrats THAT much hesitant?
