More than four out of five U.S. workers do not have their dream jobs, which most people describe as work that is fun, according to a survey released on Thursday.

Salary was one of the least important requirements of a dream job, cited by just 12 percent of respondents in the survey by CareerBuilder.com, an online job site, and The Walt Disney Co , which is holding a contest in which winners can get a chance to work at a Disney theme park job for a day.

...Fields with the least number of workers with dream jobs were accommodations and food services at 9 percent, manufacturing at 9 percent and retail at 10 percent.

Among major U.S. cities, workers in Boston had the highest incidence of feeling they have their dream jobs, at 37 percent, followed by Sacramento at 26 percent, San Francisco at 23 percent, Philadelphia at 22 percent, Salt Lake City at 20 percent, and Dallas and Portland, both at 19 percent.

...Asked what they had wanted to be as adults when they were children, 22 percent of people surveyed said firefighter, 17 percent said princess and 16 percent said professional dancer. An equal number of people -- 14 percent -- wanted to be cowboy or president.

When I was a kid, I wanted to be an explosive demolition man, jet pilot, or the guy that drives the wrecking ball.

Now I am an engineer, so I can do two of the three (eye sight isn't there for me to be a fighter jet pilot).

I kept waiting for the insinuation that it's the government's job to do something about it. Maybe that will come later.

I heard a comment about this the other day.

When exactly did work turn onto a hobby for enjoyment?

My approach is, there is a certain level of job security in having a job no one in their right mind would want to do ... like mine.

When I was growing up, I wanted to be a paramedic.

Did that for 5 years and then went off to the University. Those five years served me well.

It shouldn't be enjoyment, but should offer something other than a paycheck.

I am just shocked that so many do.

I enjoy my job, I even like my co-workers but it is not a dream job. Some day I will have that dream job. That will be when I am working for me.

I am in the process of becoming self-employed. Largely due to necessity--no one else wants me.

"It shouldn't be enjoyment, but should offer something other than a paycheck."

Agreed but this is about a "dream job". Until recently, that wasn't even a pursuit of mankind. Now, if a person works a job they don't particularly like (like the vast majority of people who ever drew a breath) they tend to be viewed as less than successful.

I just think people have been falsely led to believe that if they don't love their job, something is wrong. That's kind of what this article alludes to.

If work was supposed to be fun they wouldn't call it work.

They'd call it fun.
