Reporter Disputes Ari Fleischer's Testimony at CIA Leak Trial (David Gregory told of Wilson's wife)

WASHINGTON — A former Time Magazine correspondent says former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer got it wrong when he testified under oath Monday at the CIA leak trial that he disclosed to the journalist the identity of a secret CIA operative.

"I assumed that in some context, my name would come up," John Dickerson, Slate Magazine's chief political correspondent, told FOXNews.com on his way Tuesday to cover the trial. "I didn't realize it would come up in that fashion."

Fleischer took the stand Monday to answer questions in the trial of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney. Libby is charged with perjury and obstruction relating to the investigation of who outed CIA operative Valerie Plame.

Fleischer also testified that he first heard about Plame from Libby over lunch on July 7, 2003. Libby says he first learned about Plame on July 10 from NBC reporter Tim Russert.

Dickerson said he was surprised when he heard his name — and his photo popped up on the big screen in the courtroom — when Fleisher took the stand.

"I was at the Scooter Libby trial to cover it, and all of a sudden, I found myself in the middle of the case," Dickerson wrote.

This should come only after defense called all the media and State and CIA whores... er, witnesses and get their testimony on the record, not before.

Fitz didn't have a case since Day 1, he created it from the whole cloth.

Tony Snow didn't replace Ari, and that is a pity. He replaced Scotts his name.

I find it VERY interesting that Ari's lawyer is Bob Bennett.

Ari was leaving White House, and as one who regularly "talked" to reporters he had every reason and every right to request immunity from overzealous prosecutor in exchange for testimony (i.e., he pulled "an Ollie").

His testimony didn't give anything to prosecution that we didn't already know from documents and other witnesses - Libby KNEW Plame's identity when he talked to him, so what? Fitz is trying to crime-monger this to the jury, and it keeps backfiring at every turn because defense keeps successfully hammering at his witnesses' memory and recollections.

I think a reason that nobody can remember exactly when they first learned that Plame worked for the CIA is because nobody thought it was all that important at the time.

She parked her car everyday in the CIA employee parking lot, so most people probably weren't aware that it was some big state secret that she worked there.

When does David Gregory get indicted?

I don't know about Gregory yet, but it looks like Fitzy is gonna have to indict either John Dickerson of Ari Fleischer--maybe he should just indict them both, try them together, and let the jury sort it out. One of them has GOT to be lying because the V. Plame deal was such a matter of all consuming, titantic, monumental importance, it could NEVER be a matter of faulty memory (except apparently with every single prosecution witness called so far).

If Ari had already told Gregory, why was Gregory, Matthews and Shuster making out like Rove leaked her name?

Yep, I read that thread.

Libby was Rich's lawyer in the early years of seeking a pardon...

Who knows who he has po'd in the past.

But they're mostly hoping he will provide access to Cheney's neck, imo.

Valerie Plame was named after the first person to climb Mt. Everest-- Lady Edwina Plame-Hillary.

I knew that, but thanks. I thought him to be a very ineffectual spokesman, consequently, a what's his name.

"I don't know about Gregory yet, but it looks like Fitzy is gonna have to indict either John Dickerson of Ari Fleischer.."

Have you already forgotten about Ari's plea agreement? Just in case you have, it granted him immunity from prosecution.

True, but the plea bargain doesn't cover perjury on the witness stand during the trial. He says he told Dickerson and Dickerson says 'no way'--so since faulty memories can't happen (according to fitzy) then we have a liar.

Yea it was rhetorical. I think MSNBC owes their loyal liberal viewers an explanation and an apology for hyping up a Rove indictment that never came.

I suspect they were trying to set up Karl Rove for the fall. Even after Libby was indicted, Matthews and Schuster kept insisting Rove was going to be indicted....which suggests to me that even the best lathed plans can go awry.'

Matthews wife was news anchor at channel 7 in DC for over 20 years, and she and Matthews were in Washington Society, so I can't believe they had never heard of Joe and Valerie Plame Wilson! Those two egotists (the Wilsons), I think, would want to be noticed wherever and whenever they could.

I do believe Andrea Mitchell spoke the truth when she said 'reporters knew Wilson's wife worked at the CIA', and I will not be surprised if it is revealed, but denied, that Tim Russert did, in fact, know of and about Valerie Plame. His wife is an investigative reporter with Vanity Fair and other publications, so they move in the "right" social circles in DC also. I can't believe they didn't take a look at the Wilson's when Joe's article that started all of this was published!
