I take it the state of Washington does not currently have an income tax?

Washington state doesn't have an income tax? Well, I'll be damned. Hope springs eternal after all.

Yet another reason I'm happy to have chosen Idaho over Washington.

It requires a vote of the people. It will not pass. As liberal as Washingtonians are, they do not trust the state government at all.

Um... Idaho already HAS an income tax.

I realize that. Washington is already taxing its residents at a level sufficient to run government. Now they are preparing to heap an additional tax burden on top of that.

You don't really expect the Washington state government to reduce sales or property taxes do you? They intend the income tax on top of what they are currently collecting.

No Income Tax but we make up for it in spades in others ways. 8.8% Sales Tax, Property Taxes, Gas Tax (one of the highest in the nation), Cigarette taxes, phone taxes, you name it. Every election there are new bills introduced adding to our tax burden. Bills that get passed because people have no clue how much of there money is already being taxed and they have no clue what it's being used for.

And if an Income Tax goes through you think they will revoke the existing taxes?

I believe it also requires a constitutional amendment.

They can have a sales tax or an income tax, but not both.

They'll have to get it past the voters, and that will be a really tough sell (even in WA).

Other than this proposal, if it wasn't for job, I would live in WA near the OR border and do my shopping in OR - no sales tax.

Hey, we got something like a 2+ billion dollar surplus from the gas tax. (which was supposed to benefit ALL Washingtonians).

But they're gonna shoot that wad on a mile and a half of viaduct, so keep track of whatever potholes are close to you, cause they're gonna be there for a while!

However, we have a 8.8 percent sales tax and a B & O tax on businesses. The B & O taxes you on your gross sales.

I believe it also requires a constitutional amendment

That'd be Senate Joint Resolution 8209;

http://www.freerepublic.com/perl/profiles?location=95

We also have multiple demands to raise sales taxes along with 14 cents a gallon tax increases in the last 3 years to help pay for highway improvements (disneyland rides, Big Dig, monorails, streetcars, you name it) totaling over 134 billion dollars in just 3 counties, and they still claim to be at least 66 billion dollars short.

1st year school administrators (office help) just got a 50% salary increase, State Patrol is getting an additional COLA up to 10% just to help them with high mortgages (due partly because of new taxes), so now all the other public employees (roughly 25 or 30% of the population I think) want the same double COLA.....It would not take much of an exodus to send this state crashing through the plate glass foundation on which it stands.

Sometimes it feels like living in a Leper colony ~ how long can it possibly last?
