It is dragging the party down. The NE and NW liberal Republicans are incompatible to the Southern Conservative Republicans. There is no halfway and Reps like Snowe, Collins and Specter have fought the Conservative Republicans every step of the way.

There is no halfway

Then why did you bring it up and suggest that the NE and NW liberals had to move toward your position? Is the only acceptable compromise when they adopt your position? With such "my way or the highway" thinking, why do you even bother with the Republican Party? Why not join the Constitution Party and not be bothered by the ideologically unpure?

Unfortunately, such black and white thinking doesn't work in politics. Politics is about building coalitions. Sometimes you have to associate with people that you don't agree with for the greater good.

Why was Ronald Reagan such a successful politician? Was it his conservative views? Only partly. President Reagan (the father of the "Big Tent" Republican Party) was a political realist who would accept half a loaf rather than gamble on getting the whole loaf and losing. Such pragmatism is lost on many in the conservative movement.
