U.S. Gov't to Release New Dollar Coins

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Two recent efforts to promote wide usage of a dollar coin proved unsuccessful. But maybe Susan B. Anthony and Sacagawea should not take public rejection personally. It's not easy overcoming people's indifference to dollar coins, even those honoring such historic figures.

An AP-Ipsos poll found that three-fourths of people surveyed oppose replacing the dollar bill, featuring George Washington, with a dollar coin. People are split evenly on the idea of having both a dollar bill and a dollar coin.

A new version of the coin, paying tribute to American presidents, goes into general circulation Thursday. Even though doing away with the bill could save hundreds of millions of dollars each year in printing costs, there is no plan to scrap the bill in favor of the more durable coin.

"I really don't see any use for it," Larry Ashbaugh, a retiree from Bristolville, Ohio, said of the dollar coin. "We tried it before. It didn't fly."

A quarter-century ago, the dollar coin showed feminist Susan B. Anthony on the front; then one in 2000 featuring Sacagawea, the Shoshone Indian who helped guide the Lewis and Clark expedition.

The latest dollar coin will bear Washington's image, followed later this year by those of John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. A different president will appear on the golden dollar coins every three months.

People have strong feelings about their money, even the penny, which occasionally is threatened with elimination.

When people were asked whether the penny should be eliminated, 71 percent said no, according to the poll of 1,000 adults conducted Nov. 28-30 that had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Some fear that getting rid of the penny will cause product prices to be rounded up, perhaps increasing inflation.

On paper (how ironic!), dollar coins always look great as long as the number crunchers continue to discount the acceptability factor. Sure the coin is durable but face it, goubermint, it has a trans-fat disadvantage when compared to bills; it's just too damned heavy. As long as men are not carrying purses, they will not want a pocket full of the things. As long as its size and weight are in the same range as the quarter, people get tired of making or receiving the incorrect change, especially when in low-light situations. And face it, she won't consider it the same with a garter full of Sacajawea's.

OK, the previous versions have been out long enough that the TCO model should show dollar coins are no bargain in the long run.

"Why not honor our fallen soldiers with a coin instead of continuing the ridiculous trend of honoring professional politicians?"

Great idea. Pics of Congressional "Medal of Honor" winners.

Of course, the pseudo-pacifist leftists would have a cow.

That has got to be the most unflattering portrayal of George Washington I've ever seen on a coin. You almost expect him to open his mouth and reveal fangs.

I hadn't noticed that but you're right! Instead of looking solumn or dignified, he looks like a man whose shoes are too tight. How about something like one of these instead?

"If I had 10 ones, it would mean I was setting at my favorite watering hole tipping the dancers"

Which would you prefer, putting a dollar bill in their g string, or a coin in the slot?

my .79 cent bean burrito and my .69 cent soft taco will now be costing me a dollar.

The new minimum wage will propel us rapidly in that direction.

Only a tiny % of money actually exists as currency. The rest is just leger entries transferred electronically. One caveat about proposals like raising the minimu wage or eliminating the penny is that they look fine if you think ecxpansion and prosperity extend indfinately into the future. However, in an economic downturn both would make our response inflexible. The chinese are not chasing this inflation model, but they are detrmined to kep prices down so their people don't have to climb so far on the income ladder. Keep your pennies.

Standing Liberty Quarter
http://www.coincentric.com/StandingLibertyQuarter.htm

Legend has it that complaints arose concerning the partial nudity of Miss Liberty. It is rumored that Miss Liberty's exposed right breast was offensive to some and due to this the design was changed part way through 1917. Others believe that the motif was revised to show Miss Liberty nearly completely encased in a suit of armor or mail, probably in reference to preparedness for the World War then raging in Europe.

Canada uses the one (loonie) and two (toonie) dollar coins. I thought they worked great. No more having paper dollars spit back out of a pop or car wash machine. If we make our machines accept them they'll go over.

That means we'll eventually see coins with Clinton on them.

Whashington lost most of his teeth, almost all of them, at an early age. He wore ill-fitting dentures that must have been continually painfull.

I think in his shoes I might have scowled as well.

The government is so fricking stupid. Why don't they gradually take the stupid dollar bill out of circulation and people will use the dollar coins then. DUH

I actually found some good legitimate uses for the dollar coins -

First - they are convenient for leaving tips.

Second - when out of the country, We used them as tips to tour guides and others in Mexico and the Caribbean - they really seemed to like them.

Third - children liked them

I would also imagine that casinos like them as well (dollar slots)... but that I don't have experience with.
