Citing recent internal memos, Department of Homeland Security employees complain their boss Michael Chertoff is hamstringing counter-terror operations with pro-Islamic political correctness.
They say headquarters has cautioned officials not to describe Islamic terrorism as Islamic and to respect Islam as a "religion of peace."
"It's constantly drilled into us that Islam is not the enemy, and that the terrorists are merely a minority of 'extremists' distorting Islam," said one official who wished to go unnamed.
...
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice also has toned down her war rhetoric.
Last month she referred to the terrorist group Hamas as a "resistance movement," even though the group has been on her department's official terror blacklist for a dozen years.
...
"We are losing in Iraq and Afghanistan because the political leaders in both parties and their politically correct acolytes in the media, the academy and the general officer corps refuse to square with the American people about the enemy's motivation," said Michael F. Scheuer, who headed the CIA's bin Laden unit.
You people should lay off Chertoff. He recently said in a hearing on Capital Hill something to the effect... that within the next year or two he hopes to add 7% more border agents.
Doesn't that speedy process make u sleep better? SIC Off
I think we are accomplishing many goals in Iraq if we are allowed to finish it.
First and foremost was removing the threat of WMD from Iraq. History can say Bush lied 1000x but the facts are everyone believed they had them and Bush believed Saddam would have given them to the wrong people to use against the U.S. Despite the revisionist history it seems obvious that Bush would have been the biggest loser in history if WMD had been used against America.
We removed a sadistic dictator and looked to establish a moderate democracy in a nation strategically located that could and would blunt other nations who might wish us harm in the region.
We are also fighting the battle over there vs here and that is a good thing.
I don't think "Islam" is the enemy although I do think moderate Muslims have failed to roundly condemn and root out the radicalism that is threatening us all.
It is a complex situation with no easy answers and that makes it hard to solve with our current attention span, two party system, and resolve here in America.
I support the idea of trying to establish a democracy in Iraq for many reasons but I also can say with 100% certainty that until the interference by Iran and Syria is addressed we will not be successful. The best exit strategy for Iraq IMO is to drive several hundred miles to the east before we come home.
I think if we aggressively dealt with those who wish us harm it would make life much easier for the moderates over there.
The Rats have had us by the balls since the 2004 elections, even though we had the majority until the end of 2006.
"How lower can the Bush Administration go"
Down to about 18 or 19%.
I hope everyone here has been buying Ammo!
Well, it is unless we want to fight all of them at once.
More of that new tone in Washington the president came up with. It really really worked well with the Democrats so why not with moslems? /sarcasm off
The goals of Islam are well known, and the effort to attempt to bring Democracy and Freedom to the region is a worthy cause.
Khomeini Islamists state their intent to convert the World to Islam or annihilate or enslave infidels that do not. Thank you Jimmy Carter.
Iraq also happens to be in the middle of the ME and it is wise to have a friendly location there favorable to the United States and our allies of the region.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice also has toned down her war rhetoric. Last month she referred to the terrorist group Hamas as a "resistance movement," even though the group has been on her department's official terror blacklist for a dozen years.
Outrageous and disgusting.
PC = the people who keep your economy going are muslims and you don't want to hurt their feelings.
I'm still waiting for some Imam tell us how these "terrorists" are hijacking and missinterpreting:
Qur'an:8:7 "Allah wished to confirm the truth by His words: Wipe the infidels out to the last.'"
Qur'an:8:12 "Your Lord inspired the angels with the message: I am with you. Give firmness to the Believers. I will terrorize the unbelievers. Therefore smite them on their necks and every joint and incapacitate them. Strike off their heads and cut off each of their fingers and toes."
Qur'an:8:39 "So, fight them till all opposition ends and the only religion is Islam."
Ishaq:204 "Men, do you know what you are pledging yourselves to in swearing allegiance to this man?' Yes. In swearing allegiance to him we are pledging to wage war against all mankind.'"
"Religion of peace" indeed. The Koran is what, about 125 pages or so long. About 5 of them contain all that is "peaceful" about Islam. The rest of it tells muslims how to kill, lie, trick, steal, and bash women.
Qur'an:9:5 "When the sacred forbidden months for fighting are past, fight and kill disbelievers wherever you find them, take them captive, beleaguer them, and lie in wait and ambush them using every stratagem of war."
That is what Islam is all about. Nothing else.
Most unfortunate indeed, and we didn't follow through and complete the action in Gulf War one, many died. H.W. Bush seemingly implied to some in Iraq that the U.S. would support them should they revolt against Sadaam Hussein resulting in more deaths.
It truly is remarkable that we have anybody working with us in the ME after those events, and could also be a contributing factor as to why it is taking so long to gain solvency.
The other country of note is Israel and how the State Department is pressuring them to into submission to not be too harsh on their Arab neighbors, even though they receive rockets and get bombed often during the week.
Chertoff is IMO probably the most ineffectual bean-counter we could have, running that ludicrous monstrosity of beaureaucratic ineptness.
The Department of Homeland Security would give "Teapot Dome" a bad name!
At one point, years ago, I thought this twirp might amount to something! How wrong I was!
Sounds like Chertoff belongs in Wayne Palmer's administration.
If Israel didn't need all the support it could possibly get from the United States, a partner in Freedom and Democracy it could simply tell the World to go to Hell and take care of the situation themselves.
Unfortunately we still have a Jimmy Carteresque "Foggy Bottom" exercising extremist actions over Israel for some Worldview I don't quite understand, but realize they are.
I am not Jewish, but I grew up with many American Jews, and worked for Zim for a number of years tending to their Vessel Shoreside Operations on the West Coast. I like and respect the Israeli's.
Chertoff is proving to be a real dick.
