Study: P2P Effect On Legal Music Sales "Not Statistically Distinguishable From Zero"
Ars Technica ^ | 2/12/07 | Ken Fisher

A new study in the Journal of Political Economy by Felix Oberholzer-Gee and Koleman Strumpf has found that illegal music downloads have had no noticeable effects on the sale of music, contrary to the claims of the recording industry.

Entitled "The Effect of File Sharing on Record Sales: An Empirical Analysis," the study matched an extensive sample of music downloads to American music sales data in order to search for causality between illicit downloading and album sales. Analyzing data from the final four months of 2002, the researchers estimated that P2P affected no more than 0.7% of sales in that timeframe....

I know a local college student who actually downloaded so much music that she had to buy an external hard drive to keep her laptop from crashing because of her hard drive being full.

It is equally easy for someone to buy the CD and make copies for their friends, so it shows up on both sides of the equation and cancels out (as a factor in determining the effect of downloading on CD sales).

No, getting on your computer and clicking a few buttons is far easier than driving to the store and looking for a cd, buying it, and then converting the songs to mp3.
Trying to pretend that an online catalog of pirated music readily available to anyone does not affect music sales is just plain silly.

The corporate ownership of all the radio stations, and satellite radio. Almost all the programming is automated, and they rarely identify the artist or the song names.

You obviously don't own a Satellite radio.

I do own satellite radio. They still don't do a good job of identifying artists or materials.

While I don't want to call you a liar because I know you from years of posts...this doesn't ring true. EVERY song that appears on your sat radio has PAD data associated with it. Every song that is played displays on your radio with artist and song name. Furthermore, on XM at least, the various rock channels I listen to "Lucy" "Ethel" "Squizz" play tons of FANTASTIC music that is NEVER played on broadcast radio. I found out about "Army of Anyone" because of XM. They aren't played on terrestrial radio at all.

Maybe I'm not getting the right stations at the right time?
Perhaps we don't listen to the same music genres. I just know that when I hear something, at least 90% of the time I want to hear what the song title is or who the artist is. I don't think I should have to search for it. And if I'm driving down the highway in traffic, I don't want to take my eyes off the road to see what it is, either.

You have XM or Sirius?

Your response suggests that you don't.

I have XM. It came with my new car, just finished the 90 day trial period. I wasn't going to renew, but they offered me a year for $77 which I guess is half price. That's about what I find it worth. The funny thing is that I think I like the 50s and 60s music the best.

Ok, well, your XM radio should (and I want to emphasize this) should show you which channel you're on, what artist is singing and what they are singing.

I tell you this, I LOVE my XM. I have a long stupid commute and 202 in the morning from 6am Est to 7am est keeps me laughing my ass off.

I like my other XM channels, specially the rock group ones that start at like 40 and run up to 54 or something like that.

It depends on what station is playing. Not all transmit that information. Sometimes it's just the channel info. Sometimes it does tell you the other info.

The best thing I like about it is the lack of commercials.
Maybe I will read my manual! LOL!

The point is still that even if all that info is sent to me on satellite radio, the music stores likely won't have that in stock. It is very difficult to purchase quality music these days.

Gonna call bullshit on this one. I listen to 50s, Jazz, racing etc. ALL the stations broadcast PAD data to the display on the radio as to what it is they are shooting at ya. Gonna give you this out. What radio is it that you listen to XM with?

The radio in the car. I don't know, GM issue equipment. Bose? Delco? There were several versions available, I just took the one that was in the car. It sounds good, I really didn't choose it for XM, more for the leather interior and sunroof. LOL!

What are you referring to with "PAD"? To me, that means "Packet Assembly & Disassembly" with regards to data.

As a do-over.

PAD Data is identification of what comes to your Sat Radio. The in vehicle display will show the pad data from the Sat.
