Poland honors Lithuanian independence
17.02.2007
President Lech Kaczynski and First Lady Maria Kaczynska have taken part in National Day celebrations in Vilnius at the invitation of Lithuanian president Valdas Adamkus. The events marked the 89th anniversary of Lithuanias regaining of independence in 1918 at the end of World War One. The Polish guest congratulated the Lithuanian nation courage in proclaiming their countrys sovereignty at the time and their repeated achievement at the beginning of the Nineties when Lithuania defected from the crumbling USSR. President Kaczynski said Lithuania enjoys enough prestige thanks to this independence determination to hold a rightful position within the EU and NATO community. He underscored that it is not only territorial and population size which determine a countrys standing, but also the spirit of its nation and its unwavering faith. In a special address to his host Valdas Adamkus, the Polish head of state drew attention to the strategic partnership of the two neighbors. It has been best exemplified in the recent agreement on bridging Polands and Lithaunias electric power grids and the purchase of the Lithuanian Mazeikiai oil refinery by Polish PKN Orlen.
Happy Independence Day #1! Lithuania has two . . . here's hoping it won't need a third.
Freedom is sweet for those who have tasted the bitter fruits of tyranny. God bless the free people of eastern Europe.
