Very likely a transformer explosion.
They can sound like a bomb going off.
The loss of utilities is also indicative of a transformer.

Hunterdon County here Streets & Trips shows a large Exxon facility just south of the Morristown Municipal Airport off Park Ave/Hwy 623.
Is that a refinery?? storage? laboratory facility?
Possible source of BANG??

Probably right, but if many people all over heard it and not just a small acreage, probably not a simple transformer. They have limited "hearing" range.
