Israel seeks all clear for Iran air strike
telegraph.co.uk (excerpt) ^ | February 24, 2007 | Con Coughlin

Excerpt -

Israel is negotiating with the United States for permission to fly over Iraq as part of a plan to attack Iran's nuclear facilities, The Daily Telegraph can reveal.

To conduct surgical air strikes against Iran's nuclear programme, Israeli war planes would need to fly across Iraq. But to do so the Israeli military authorities in Tel Aviv need permission from the Pentagon.

A senior Israeli defence official said negotiations were now underway between the two countries for the US-led coalition in Iraq to provide an "air corridor" in the event of the Israeli government deciding on unilateral military action to prevent Teheran developing nuclear weapons.

It might also be sabre-rattling to make Ahmadinejad quake in his boots and be more amenable to diplomacy.

doubt that Pentagon would want to deal with the fallout resulting from an Israeli Airstrike.

Fallout in the literal sense. The only way to do this correctly and make a serious dent in the program is to use nuclear bunker busters and go for a saturation of the sites identified by the intel. Iran learned from the 1980 strike by the IDF on Iraq. They dispersed their sites and put them underground in hardened shelters. The IDEAL method to fry 'em would be to use the NEUTRON Bomb, but we can thank Peanut Jimmy for taking that one off the table. Now it's got to be done the messy way. And it has GOT to be done.

Don't forget that the US can put up some tanker aircraft to refuel the Israeli aircraft.

If this is true why are we reading about it? Doesn't sound like much of a plan if it is being reported in advance for all to see. ------ I heard from reliable sources that they'll attack at 2:30 pm, March 12th but plans would change if the secret got out.

I can't think of a better way to pi$$ off a billion Muslims.

They're already irrationally pi$$ed off. It's time we stopped being concerned about pi$$ing off Muslims. Keep in mind:
Saudi Arabia, Jordan, UAE, Kuwait, Egypt and others may scream and yell publicly while privately cheering on an Iranian crisis.

Wonder how much stealth is lost with the riced-out F16 over the generic one?

what fallout is that? who says we have to deal with these freaks on the ground? wipe the bums out from the air, its high time to make these weasels afraid again. you prefer a nuclear terrorist state to the "fallout" of spanking them into oblivion before they go nuclear? make this air assault the real shock and awe, and make terrorists afraid of the cowboy in the white house again.

Doesn't sound like much of a plan if it is being reported in advance for all to see.

Given the publicity and the levels of rhetoric on the topic, it doesn't take a rocket scientist or 007 to know that lacking enforcement of the UN sanctions...something has got to give and military action is perhaps the only alternative. The only thing that needs to be classified is the level of military response. I don't think if I were the powers that be in Israel that I'd like to give Mr. Putin in Russia any advance notice that my country was planning to reduce all that neat nuclear technology and hardware into a steaming pile of radioactive slag by dropping a few nukes of our own onto their facilities.

I can't say that I care very much. Cutting OFF the nipple for oil is what we need to make us find our own oil resources in ANWR and in the Gulf of Mexico and elsewhere...Bunny huggers be damned.

"Cutting OFF the nipple for oil is what we need"

Well, that'll do it in a real hurry. Have you given any thought as to what we'll use until these other sources come on line?

Didn't think so.

Ummmmm ANWR? Pre-drilled already. Well heads waiting to be turned on. Pipeline waiting to aid in distribution. That will do the job in the short term until we can bring the newly discovered Gulf Oil Fields into play. A much bigger challenge is to build enough new refineries to handle the increased production of crude. We haven't built a new refinery in lessee almost 30 years? We actually buy our fuel mostly pre-refined. This is also a fortuitious circumstance in the sudden and recent proliferation of hybrid and even pure electric vehicles will take up the slack until we can get the gas flowing into American pumps from American sources. This should, hopefully, let me get back to feeding my axles of evil: a big gas guzzling BEAST of a 4x4 SUV and do so cheaply as the Good Lord intended.

Yes, it may be difficult initially. Painful, even. But it seems that is exactly what Americans need to feel in the shor term to get off the dime and actually DO something in their own best interests instead of rolling over and offering our belly in submission to our enemies.

Of course we could just NEUTRON-NUKE their A$$ and TAKE the gas! Works for me.

"While they are passing through the designated Iraqi air corridor we will need to send up our tankers and quietly refuel them as at this moment they (Israelis) do not have the capability to do a "there and back" strike without refueling, nor do they have any refueling tankers in their inventory."

Think geography....what is on the other side of Iran? Afghanistan.

If Israel used an old Soviet airbase there for a refuel and rearm, they could strike coming and going. If they did it covertly, we could deny knowledge of the base.
