McCain, Giuliani stay away from debate

T wo leading Republican presidential candidates will skip next month's New Hampshire debate, a WMUR-TV source said yesterday. Faxed letters arrived at the WMUR newsroom yesterday, announcing that Arizona Sen. John McCain and former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani planned to bypass the debate.

McCain is scheduled to visit Iraq, said Jill Hazelbaker, his New Hampshire spokeswoman. The cancellation was not intended as a slight to New Hampshire, where McCain won the 2000 Republican primary, Hazelbaker said. "The Senator looks forwards to frequently visiting New Hampshire and talking straight with voters," she said in an e-mail.

A scheduling conflict will keep Giuliani from the debate, Maria Comella, the campaign's deputy communications director said yesterday. But "Mayor Giuliani is looking forward to a series of vigorous debates across the country," she said in an e-mail.

The New Hampshire debates are scheduled for April 4 and 5, and will be sponsored by WMUR, CNN and the New Hampshire Union Leader. CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer is set to moderate the debate, with Scott Spradling of WMUR and John DiStaso of the Union Leader providing questions. Republican candidates are scheduled to debate one day, with Democrats debating the other.

Democratic presidential candidates gathered in Nevada last week for the first all-candidates forum of the 2008 campaign. But the New Hampshire events had been billed as the first debates of the campaign.

It is not advantageous for some candidates to debate - just like Hillary - too much to lose when people see the real person.

I pray the American people can see through these frauds.

I hope they have two empty podia there, to highlight the absence of McCain and Giuliani, and that those candidates who actually do deign to grace the presence of the fine people in New Hampshire, proceed to debate the positions of these two putative frontrunners as if they actually did need to bother showing up.

pretty much sounds like the hillary/obama strategy of skipping early dem debates. they have almost nothing to gain and everything to lose, so why bother?

Folks, do you REALIZE how far away the primaries and the election IS???

There will be PLENTY of time to have debates. Why would a candidate have to participate in debates THIS far out??

Why would they run this far out? If you are gonna run, show some backbone.

We've got our work cut out for us, but it's the right thing. It's late for me, going to call it a day.

Goodnight everyone.

It's about time this perpetual NH nonsense came to an end.

And if it took a team of RINOs to do it, we're all better off!

They'll stay away from a debate, but will jump at every chance to get Larry king or Sean Hannity puffballs on the TV. If I'm gonna see Skeletor or McLame on TV, I want to see Hunter chewing their asses in a debate

Do they even know the total list of GOP Presidential candidates who will be showing up for this first debate?

"...I want to see Hunter chewing their asses in a debate.."

Me too, pissant. It's clear to see that they are scared to face "The Hunter". Perhaps their absence will speak louder than their blubbering lies. Sooner or later they'll have to face the piper.
