:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Senior Taliban leader held in Pakistan
-Full Story-

Pakistani security forces have captured a high-ranking Taliban leader in the southwestern city of Quetta, a senior security official and Taliban sources said late Thursday

The capture of Mullah Obaidullah Akhund marked the first Pakistan arrest of a senior leader of the Islamist militia since it was driven from power in Afghanistan in 2001 when thousands of its fighters fled into Pakistan.

The security official and Taliban sources said Akhund, the third most senior member of the Taliban's 10-member leadership council, was arrested late on Monday, hours after a surprise visit to Pakistan by U.S. Vice-President Dick Cheney.

Thank you RR! Also condolences for the loss of your grandnephew. Three years old - another very sad loss of a child's life. I'll be praying for his family, and you.

We are also quite fanatical about keeping our smoke detector batteries changed and working. One can only wonder how many senior citizens and people living in poverty in old homes have no smoke detectors.

PapaDearest raised the issue that seatbelts are mandatory, while many children live in homes without fire protection and die just as horrifically by smoke and fire as by auto accident, yet there are no mandates to update old homes with this vital life saving equipment.

Thanks AD. These are dark days for my family back in the Midwest, and certainly not something they will ever quite overcome. Your sympathy and prayers are greatly appreciated.

Thank you fanfan. Those prayers are definitely needed. I've never seen my sister so distraught. The Lord obviously wanted her quicker than we were ready to let her go. I truly believe the loss of a child's life hits our hearts extremely deeply.
Bless you for caring enough to offer prayers - our family is appreciative.

Bless you both for your prayers and concern. With RushmoreRocks family losing a 3 year old grandnephew and my family's loss of an 8 year old girl, it's two lives too many of little children and two families that will never quite be mended.

Once you go into a shelter, you are not permitted to leave and will be arrested if you attempt to do so. The folks at FEMA are NOT our friends.

Also, you won't be allowed to keep any firearms or knives of any consequence. We saw how well that policy worked in the Superdome in N.O., right? Aka The Dome of Death?

No pets in a shelter...well in most shelters. The bottom line is, if you go to a shelter, your life is no longer your own, And as A_D has said, FEMA is not our friend!

It feels great to be back. I'm shooting an IDPA match tomorrow morning and I've been invited to join a Congressional delegation that is going to tour the Miami VA Hospital (along with the press, of course) because my experiences have been so positive and that has to be highlighted in view of the disasters at Walter Reed and elsewhere. They sure took care of me.

Once again I can't thank my freeper extended family enough for all their prayers and good wishes. It still moves me to tears.

"two families that will never quite be mended"

Until you meet again in Heaven, and then it will be.
In between is the long waiting time, but it will come to be exactly as God has promised it.
Terrible as it is now, this does have a happy ending in the end. Never forget that.
Tears and prayers.

Good luck with the match. That tells me you are doing much better to be participating in a IDPA and I expect a full post match report :-). Most curious as to what defensive scenarios they are using these days.

Moroccan police arrest suspect in Madrid, Casablanca terrorist attacks
March 9, 2007

RABAT, Morocco: Moroccan officials said Friday that they have arrested an alleged member of a terrorist group believed linked to the 2004 Madrid bombings and 2003 attacks in Casablanca.

Saad Houssaini was arrested Thursday in Casablanca for his alleged role in the Moroccan Islamic Combatant Group, Interior Ministry spokesman Abderrahman Achour said, adding that Moroccan authorities had sought Houssaini since 2002. The group, known by its French acronym GICM, is considered a terrorist group by several governments and has been implicated in the Madrid and Casablanca attacks. Experts say the GICM was started by Moroccans who had traveled to Afghanistan in the 1990s.

Moroccan authorities released few details about Houssaini's suspected wrongdoing, but experts described him as a key figure in the May 2003 attacks on Casablanca, which killed 45 people and woke the North African nation to the threat of Islamic terrorism.

Chemicals stockpiled for 'jihad on Sydney' (Australia)
March 07, 2007

NINE suspected terrorists allegedly stockpiled a cache of deadly chemicals as they plotted a "violent jihad" on Sydney. In what is being described as the biggest terror trial in Australia's history, Penrith Local Court yesterday heard for the first time detailed allegations against the nine alleged Muslim extremists.

The men stand accused of plotting a massive terrorist attack on Sydney - with Lucas Heights nuclear plant the possible target. In her opening address, prosecutor Wendy Abraham QC claimed preparations for an attack involved chemical stockpiling, the collation of "extremist" documents and specialised terrorist training.

The court heard documents written in Arabic showed step-by-step instructions on how to make deadly explosives such as TATP and HMTD. The materials were allegedly found during searches of their homes and vehicles, with one found hidden in a children's book called Choice Islamic Stories.

Bradley Umar Sariff Baladjam, Khaled and Moustafa Cheikho, Mohamed Ali Elomar, Abdul Rakib Hasan, Mohammed Omar Jamal, Mirsad Mulahalilovic, Khaled Sharrouf and Mazen Touma faced court together for the first time since their arrest during ASIO raids in November 2005.

Three Iranian businessmen disappear in Turkey
Mar. 9, 2007

Three Iranians disappeared in Turkey, following allegations that they attempted to smuggle missiles into Iran, it was reported on Friday. Turkish newspapers reported Friday morning that the three Iranians, who owned Turkish companies operating, disappeared late last year following their attempts to smuggle spare used missile parts to Iran.

Reportedly, the attempt to export American-made rocket pieces to Iran, was foiled when Turkish customs informed the US authorities of the sale. Turkish newspapers reported that the three Iranians disappeared shortly after the incident, last December.

Jundallah shows footage of kidnapped Iranian cops
Friday, March 09, 2007

DUBAI: An Iranian Sunni militant group has released a videotape purportedly showing four kidnapped members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, according to Al-Arabiya television which aired the video on Thursday.

The videotape attributed to the Jundallah (Soldiers of God) militant group said the four men were nabbed following a clash with security forces in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan, the Dubai-based news channel said. The four men appeared on their knees, while two masked gunmen stood behind them. One of the hostages seemed to be speaking but his voice was muted.

Al-Arabiya said the group claimed in the tape that the four hostages were an officer and three soldiers in the Revolutionary Guards. Authorities in mainly Shia Iran said last week that militants killed two policemen and kidnapped four others in a late-night ambush in the sensitive border province before fleeing to neighbouring Pakistan. The clash followed an upsurge of violence in the border area. A spokesman for the militant group said it had no connection to Al Qaeda, to the Taliban or US intelligence, in a separate statement in poor Arabic.

Thanks for your kind thoughts. We are very worried about my sister-in-law. It was her medicine they thought the little guy got into. (after the fact) They were baby-sitting their young grandson that night. He slept with them. They woke the next morning and wondered why this very active little boy was still asleep. My brother-in-law is an R.N. He immediately went into "E.R. Mode". Tried CPR and did everything he could. The toxicology reports came in today. It was (as we expected) Lomotil poisoning. My sweet sister-in-law (Song-Sun) is a South Korean. She has been in this country for 10 years, but still has the "kill yourself if you have disgraced your family or country" ideology. My heart breaks for her. Naturally, their daughter is blaming her for the loss of her son. A terrible tragedy.

Lock up your meds!
