:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Senior Taliban leader held in Pakistan
-Full Story-

Pakistani security forces have captured a high-ranking Taliban leader in the southwestern city of Quetta, a senior security official and Taliban sources said late Thursday

The capture of Mullah Obaidullah Akhund marked the first Pakistan arrest of a senior leader of the Islamist militia since it was driven from power in Afghanistan in 2001 when thousands of its fighters fled into Pakistan.

The security official and Taliban sources said Akhund, the third most senior member of the Taliban's 10-member leadership council, was arrested late on Monday, hours after a surprise visit to Pakistan by U.S. Vice-President Dick Cheney.

Spanish police arrest Canadian man allegedly linked to Islamic terrorism
March 12, 2007

MADRID, Spain: Spanish police have arrested a Canadian man suspected of helping finance Islamist terrorist activities, authorities said on Monday.

The 61-year-old man, identified as Brian David Anderson, is wanted by U.S. authorities for fraud and is believed to have helped finance a training camp in Afghanistan, the Interior Ministry said in a statement. He was arrested in a Madrid hotel thanks to joint collaboration with the FBI, the ministry said.

It also added Anderson is thought to be linked to a New York businessman called Abdul Tawala Ibn Ali Alishtari, 53, who is currently being tried on terrorism charges in the United States.

Al Qaeda Planned UK Internet Attack
12 March, 2007

Evidence of terrorist activity in United Kingdom was recently discovered by the country's authorities, the attackers planning to start a powerful attack to affect the economy and the online services hosted in the country. It seems like the terrorists were planning to infiltrate a high-security Internet hub located in London to find and steal all the information it stores. The hub contains a huge amount of information about the online services running in London such as stock exchange and other Internet businesses.

McDonalds restaurants in Rostov-on-Don evacuated following bomb threat (Russia)
Mar 12 2007

Rapid reaction services are evacuating people from all three McDonalds restaurants in Rostov-on-Don in response to a bomb threat received by phone at 5:15 p.m. on Monday, a local emergency spokesman told Interfax on Monday.

"It is not known which of the three restaurants in Rostov-on-Don has been mined. For this reason, rapid reaction services are checking all three McDonalds fast-food eateries in Rostov-on-Don. Two of them are located in the center, and the third one in a residential area in the north of the city," the spokesman said. Specialists are checking the three restaurants for bombs, he said.

Imams removed from flight in Twin Cities say they will sue

St. Paul, Minn. — (AP) - Six Islamic leaders who were removed from a U.S. Airways flight in November said they will sue the airline for discrimination.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations announced the planned lawsuit on Monday and said it would provide details on Tuesday. It declined to say which court the group would sue in, or provide the name of the attorney handling the case. (snip)

Once Upon a Time in the West (Midlands)

ENGLAND. THE YEAR, 2007.

My name is Adil. I have been born and raised among dutiful and obedient Muslims, and I aim to misbehave.

Already I have fallen from grace. I am no longer one of them, a reason sufficient for their delicately-placed wrath to have me consigned, in this world and the next, to the most grievous of penalties; for what else should the reward be for those who behave like me, they would say if they knew, but disgrace in this life? So no matter where I go in the realms of Islam, I am a hidden traitor to my people, a renegade without honour to be executed. And for them to know of my apostasy is to know of their fear.

Still, now and again I silently walk among the Muslim flock, to observe their incessant bleating and guilty straying, and see how readily they run to the call of their watchful masters, appointees of God who oversee the enjoining of what is good and the forbidding of what is not. And they remind the herd that He is not unmindful of what they do.

Neither am I.

Arrest in Spain Connected to Indictment of NY Businessman
By Andrew Cochran

http://counterterrorismblog.org/2007/03/arrest_in_spain_connected_to_i.php

Spanish authorities have arrested a man identified as Brian David Anderson, a Canadian apparently involved in the fraud and terrorist financing case in which Abdul Tawala Ibn Ali Alishtari, a NYC-area businessman, was indicted. I posted on that case (with the indictment) when it was announced on February 17 - a quote: "Alishtari was indicted of sending $152,000 to Pakistan and Afghanistan to support a terrorist training camp in Afghanistan by funding the purchase of night-vision goggles, and of laundering $25,000 from a New York bank through a bank in Montreal as part of the funding scheme. But he was also indicted for allegedly running a six-year-long scheme through which he and unnamed others 'fraudulently obtained millions of dollars in investments from various individuals by falsely promising high, guaranteed rates of return.'" So now we know the name of Alishtari's (alleged) Canadian assistant in the scheme, and we see a good example of international cooperation in stopping terrorist financing.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "CHICAGO -- A woman suspected of starting a series of fires near Wrigley Field, including one that killed four people, was charged Monday with murder, authorities said.

Mary Smith, 43, was charged with four counts of first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated arson, the Cook County state's attorneys office said.

Police identified Smith after witnesses reported seeing an unkempt woman, wearing clear plastic bags on her feet, near the scene of three small fires, said Edward O'Donnell, commander of the police department's bomb and arson unit."

Dispute Halts Delivery Of Atomic Fuel to Iran
Washington Post ^ | March 13, 2007 | Dispute Halts Delivery Of Atomic Fuel to Iran

Posted on 03/12/2007 11:14:13 PM PDT by Lorianne

MOSCOW, March 12 -- Russian officials said Monday that nuclear fuel will not be delivered to Iran this month as planned and that the September completion of a Russian-built nuclear power plant will be postponed because of an escalating dispute between the two countries.

Moscow and Tehran have been arguing for weeks over what Russia calls Iran's failure to make $25 million monthly payments on the $1 billion plant in the southern city of Bushehr. Iran insists that it has made all scheduled payments.

"It will be impossible to launch the reactor in September, and there can be no talk about supplying fuel this month," the state-owned Russian contractor Atomstroiexport said in a statement Monday.

Underlying the financial dispute appears to be increasing Russian hostility to Iran's suspected desire to build nuclear weapons and its flouting of international demands that it stop the enrichment of uranium and cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The delivery of nuclear fuel would be a major boost for the Iranians. "We hope the Russians won't politicize" the delivery, Mohammad Ali Hosseini, a Foreign Ministry spokesman, said Sunday, according to news agencies. "This should be done within the next two weeks. We expect the Russians to fulfill their commitments."
