Unsung Bomb Squad Heroes: Volunteered to Die to Disarm Rumored Nuke in New York
The Blotter ^ | March 02, 2007 11:34 AM | ABC News

According to a new book by ABC News reporters: In October 2001, the fires were still burning at Ground Zero when New York City was faced with the threat of a nuclear bomb planted inside the city, a threat so dire that no city official, including the mayor, was informed of it by the secret team assigned to prevent the device from going off.

Some details of the still-classified incident have crept out over time, but until now it never has been reported that a handful of senior New York City Police Department bomb technicians, including at least one grandfather, had volunteered to disarm the device.

Very interesting. There's a link at the bottom of the article for a downloadable excerpt - only two pages.

I thank God every day for the fine men and women in uniformed service, whether in our cities or our military, who stand in the breach for us.

Somehow a RAT will figure out a way to classify them as self serving glory hounds.

I would think that if you screw up disarming a bomb, personally, it wouldn't make much difference if it were a nuke or plastique

"Yes, yes -- but what's the latest with Anna Nicole???"

That bombshell was recently defused.

Tho with a nuke *you* may die anyway from radiation exposure even if you succeed in disarming it.

Even though heroes like these will continue to risk their lives to protect others, the day will unfortunately come when a nuke or dirty bomb will be detonated in the US by Islamic Fascists. On that day I hope the cut and run Democrats and white flag Republicans in Congress find some testicles as the American people will demand swift retribution.

From the story.

"They did so knowing they would likely die trying because even if the bomb did not go off, radiation poisoning could kill them."

As to radiation killing them? I don't know. I'd guess it would depend on what type of bomb it was. A dirty bomb, yes, it would likely give them a very large dose even if they managed to disarm it.

Couldn't they protect themselves from the radiation?

Something about this story just doesn't add up.

Considering how hard it is in this day and age to keep anything secret, I find it hard to believe something of this magnitude was suppressed for this long.

I don't know how much truth there is to this but I do seem to recall a ship being towed out from shore.

The reason we saw for this action turned out to be some "tiles" or some such thing giving off a radioactive signature. Was this around the same timeframe? Anyone remember that?

Plus if you screw up on a nuke, thousands can die, vs just maybe you.

Probably only a small number of people ever knew about it at the time, and all of those were veteran law enforcement. I'm sure that helped kept the secrecy pretty tight.

Sounds like some of this story may be B.S.!

1st - anything that's going to emit that much radiation that it would kill a person would most likely have tripped NEST rad monitors as it was moved into and around the country.

2nd - anything that's going to emit that much radiation that it would kill a person would/should have left a trail of bodies along it's path.

I'm not buying this story.
