Weekly Standard Scrapbook: Lefty site has 60x more profanity than FR
The Weekly Standard ^ | 3/3/2007

www.pottymouth.com

This may or may not come as a surprise, but there's more profanity on "The Internets" than in traditional media. Lots more. The enterprising blogger Patrick Ishmael (newsbuckit.blogspot.com) did an, excuse the pun, quick and dirty analysis of the ideological divide in online trash-talking. Make that, ideological chasm. He did a Google search for comedian George Carlin's famous "seven dirty words" on popular lefty and righty blogs. Lefty Daily Kos took top honors with 146,000 pages containing one or more of the words in question. Its lefty competitor, The Huffington Post, was close behind with 109,000. No right-wing site reached even 10,000 on the Carlin scale.

A commenter at the site refined the methodology to account for overall site size, finding a "'7 words' to pages" ratio of "1 profanity every 2 pages" for Daily Kos and "1 every 121 pages" for the Free Republic ("the foulest" of the righty sites). The study "isn't scien tific," Ishmael warns, "but hey, it's pretty @*%#$&! close."

I stumped for Rudy against Hillary last time, but not again.

From here:

http://www.cwfa.org/articles/318/CFI/cfreport/index.htm

Excerpt:

According to the Times, Giuliani has attended every “gay pride” parade in
New York during his eight years as mayor. In 1992, during his first run for
mayor, Giuliani took part in a homosexual “pride” parade that included a
contingent of pedophile activists marching behind a banner for NAMBLA (North
American Man/Boy Love

Then, from here:

http://users.rcn.com/kyp/sos.html
Spirit of Stonewall

Excerpt:

the organizing committee of Stonewall 25 is dominated by those intent on
imposing political censorship. To march in the parade, groups must take the
equivalent of a loyalty oath. They must pledge their support for
age-of-consent laws. Any group that favors the abolition of these laws has
been denied permission to march. The obvious intent of this ruling is to
keep the North American Man-Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) out of the parade,
presumably from a desire to avoid bad publicity. But it galls me that people
are being excluded not for what they do but for what they think.

Which of these members voted to allow NAMBLA to march under their own
banner? And what does NAMBLA being part of Stonewall MEAN?

Well, I'm not too enthused about any of the three front-runners. Giuliani does not come close to my vision of an ideal, or close-to-ideal candidate. But if he gets the nomination, then I would support him over any Democrat, as they are all atrocious.

I like what Giuliani says about judges (though again, its notable that he refuses to call Roe a bad decision even while promising to put anti-Roe type judges on the Sup Court). I want to believe it. If he is elected President, I will have hope that he stays true to his promise, but as of now I can't say that I'd be surprised if he didn't.

I can't remember the last time I went there

My employer (military servers) blocked DU after they caught one of the IT guys posting on the DUmp. He was reprimanded and quickly moved to another section. We still get FR, and can post as we wish, since it is pro military.

I find it hard to believe that this site is the "foulest". As a daily reader I see very little profanity here, and that number certainly surprises me.

BTW, to give credit where credit is due, this guy did this search in response to musings by Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit.

Back in the "Let it all hang out" 60's my grandmother would ask, "why should anyone want to let it all hang out? It's taken us centuries to tuck it all in."

If you look at my post above, I think that the reason our count went up is that in PJ's DU and KOS articles he posts their foul language. The guy's filter wouldn't have told him that the foul language was quotes from another site. The filter was just looking for the seven dirty words anywhere on FR's pages. In those threads we are constantly remarking about how filthy they talk and little did we know that it would end up making us look like the pottymouths.

From the source

"But that .4% is a teeny tiny margin of error. Compare that to Democratic Underground, who at this very moment are humorously reveling in their newfound linguistic primacy and who apparently have no doubt that the 947,000 hits attributed to them are accurate. That's not a trackback problem... Definitely take a look. It's a party in there."

You must not be following it as closely as some of us have. Moderators have fought tooth and nail against profanity for years to try and keep it clean here. Some links from various times in the past this has be brought up as an issue...

Do Not Curse and S*** and D*** are not good either.

NO CURSING, NO Vulgarity, NO ABBREVIATIONS either

Profanity is a crutch used by people with little intelligence and a limited vocabulary.

Here is one of my favorite sayings that my father has on a sign on the wall:

"Profanity is the effort of a feeble mind to express itself forcibly."

If they are including historical results in the analysis. I do remember that around Sept 11 some freepers got very, very angry and did post a lot of bad language. And the mods just let it go. Just check the threads from those days.

I never cared much for foul mouthed people - I'm not profane at all, save for the judicious use of a few PG-13 level words.

Most of the foul mouthed folks I know are liberal, though I don't know if there is a legitimate connection there.

I will say that it's very well known among the folks I know that I don't use profanity (most have never heard me utter even an R-Rated word). I do notice that when I am around, they do make an effort to clean up their language a bit, which I appreciate. I consider the power or setting a strong example.

I worked with and still work with liberals. They have a serious habit of using profanity for any and all reasons. Most cannot complete an entire sentence without profanity.

They could care less if females are present. I've had to stop them and tell them their behavior is unbecoming of a civil service employee. There are some females who are just as bad as the guys.

I check in on FR daily. I didn't say there was no profanity, I just can't see FR being "the foulest".
