It would look incredibly improper. He should at least wait until January of 2009.

As long as Libby can stay out of prison while the appeals are being heard, that's the safest political course of action.

He is the president; he has the power to pardon anyone at any time, and he should do this. No matter what.

C'mon Simpson is free because of the brilliant, pre-school level rhyming ability of his racist attorney Cochrane:

George Bush will never pardon Scooter Libby.

I agree. Its a political loser both ways it seems, Bush pardons he gets to hear for 700 days how he covered up a crime and pardoned a criminal(lefties of course speaking out of both sets of cheaks) while if he doesnt pardon people on the right won't be happy(well at least freepers), since he isnt running for re-election he will do nothing.

Increasingly rare at FR.

Does that make it right. Bush is becoming a very foolish president. The fight was many years ago as we are loosing control of everything. This is his chance to show we have ba!!s. If he doesn't do it today, he will have lost the Party any chance in 2008. We have to start fighting now!

Just the sort of gutsy, in-your-face thing Bush WOULDN'T do.

the bush administration

giving a pass to berger, jefferson, etc. and then caving into this sham prosecution

unbelievably pathetic wimps"

Couldn't be better said. Now, George, show some real guts and investigate these jurors, the judge and Fitz. It should only take a day or so. Then arrest them all and charge them with anything and everything you can think of. Guilty or not, let them spend every last penny they have on lawyers and legal fee's! Time for payback! And don't forget the lying reporters! They've got deep pockets! Empty them!

Three hours before the verdict the jury asked the judge, "what exactly is the charge?". They obviously didn't have a clue, but being from Washington and probably all being Democrats, they decided to convict anyway.

I don't expect a pardon, but (unlike Rush) I do expect an appeal to be successful in reversing the convictions. The judge excluded evidence that the jury should have been permitted to hear. For example, to the best of my knowledge the jury was not permitted to hear that Tim Russert had told the FBI a few months after the "outing" of Plame that he could not remember what he had discussed with Libby.

Don't count on this White House to extend a pardon to Libby anytime soon.

Maybe about December 2008 at the earliest.

For purely political reasons, Bush would not provide a pardon anytime before that. The Dem'crats and a number of Republicans are already prepared to jump on this maneuver like participants in a barroom brawl, and would cause all kinds of grief, impeding any meaningful legislative action on matters of national defense, tax law reform, energy development, or judicial appointments, while calling endlessly for hearings, subpoenas and general badgering of public officials.

Politics is a blood sport in Washington. Scooter Libby is merely the latest casualty. He just has to endure a rough 20 months or so.
