Transcript: Former Sen. Fred Thompson on 'FOX News Sunday'
Fox News Channel ^
Posted on 03/11/2007 9:07:43 AM PDT by WileyPink
I listened to Fred Thompson and felt like I was listening to a wise uncle on a Sunday afternoon sitting on the front porch. I WILL support this man for president. I even liked the answer he gave for campaign finance reform (even though I disagree with McCain/Fiengold.) I'm a true conservative, not a hyphenated conservative. I like Mr. Thompson. Thanks for your views

I just finished reading the interview. All in all, pretty unimpressive. I don't think he's got the fire in his belly necessary to get him the nomination. As a two week veteran of FR....just what would it be that would impress you? I also read the transcript...sounded pretty good to me!

I disagree. It was very impressive. FDT gave honest, straightforward answers to Wallace's questions.
As for "fire in the belly," reluctant candidates for the presidency figure prominantly in our nation's history. One man in particular did not want to break his earlier promise not to seek office. He also realized the challenges and demands of leading a government and worried that he would not fully succeed.
His concerns were addressed by many friends and officials, who had to persuade hiom to be president. They argued that the government needed his authority if it were to have any chance of succeeding. It would be far worse for him to refuse to help his country than to worry about misguided criticism regarding his earlier promise.
After his election as president, the man did not write in his journal about winning the election. Instead he wrote about his worries about doing the job well. He also wrote about his belief that he should serve 'my country in obedience to its call.'
That man was George Washington, our first, and still one of our greatest presidents.

Fred Thompson can get elected. Brownback and Huckabee cannot.

Please, former Senator Thompson, run!!!!!!! There are many intelligent people in politics but intelligence without wisdom is like a clock on the wall without batteries.

I think Fred's going to do it, and that makes me feel a lot better about '08. Same here
The sun is shining a lot brighter today just thinking about it.

Obama was born in 1961 -- the nearest thing to a post-boomer in the field.
Maybe he's your man! :)

He is in no hurry, which makes him a standout among the dozens who have already begun campaigning.

Absolutely! BTW, Where's the poster who wrote on another thread, "I bet you Thompson is going to endorse McCain." Looks like he lost that bet, LOL!

His answers were vague.
Where does Thompson differ in policy positions with his best buddy, John McCain?
Why is John McCain his idea of presidential?

I liked the line about the importance of still being worthy of being president after doing what is necessary to become president. Fred's my guy if he runs.

I read the transcript.
He avoided the abortion question. Doesn't bode well if you care about the 4000 babies that are still being killed every day.
His CFR answer was pathetic. He, more than any other individual, was responsible for the passage of McCain-Feingold.
On the borders, he's cribbing the White House talking points. And everyone knows how much credibility they have on immigration. /s
About the only place he's secure is on guns. But even there, he had to squeeze in the weasel word "generally."

And I might add that Huckabee and Brownback are both proponents of amnesty for illegal aliens. I really like Thompson's plain no-nonsense speaking. Actually his saying the words "illegal aliens" was a big plus as far as I am concerned.

Yep Fred is one of those guys who makes a person feel good about themselves.
He certainly has Reagan like qualities.
He said the following:
"think we're going into one of the most perilous times that our country has been in. I think that there are great opportunities out there.
But it's not preordained that we're going to remain the strongest and freest nation in the history of the world. We've got to do some things well. We've got to do some things differently."
Comment:
Been shouting this for the last year and it is getting more perilous as each day passes.
He may be the only potential candidate in the campaign fight that can unite most all (except for the Knot Heads) Republicans and independents.

How can you compare Fred Thompson to General George Washington, the father of our country? Or even compare him to Grant or Eisenhower, who both were the Generals and who helped win major wars?
