'Some Things You Never Forget' (Muslims held 150 hostage in DC 30 years ago)
The Washington Post ^ | March 12, 2007 | Theresa Vargas

The small scar above Marion Barry's heart has had three decades to fade, but it's still noticeable -- evidence that some things don't disappear with time.

For 39 hours in March 1977 -- before the word "terrorism" entered our daily vocabulary -- 12 gunmen paralyzed the District in a three-point siege. The group of Hanafi Muslims held about 150 people hostage in three buildings, and before they surrendered, a young reporter was killed and dozens were injured, including D.C. Council member Barry. A shotgun pellet pierced his chest, right above his heart, nearly killing him.

The 12 gunmen had several demands. They wanted the government to hand over a group of men who had been convicted of killing seven relatives -- mostly children -- of takeover leader Hamaas Abdul Khaalis. They also demanded that the movie "Mohammad, Messenger of God" be destroyed because they considered it sacrilegious.

Most of the hostages, more than 100, were captured at the B'nai B'rith headquarters.

Rae Ehrlich, a secretary on the fourth floor of the Jewish organization's building at the time, was among those held captive.

I remember it well. It was my motivation to complete Army Boot. It was my first realization that I wanted to kill muzzies. All of them. My next realization, Jimmy Catuh was in need of a vacation. I registered Republican on my 18th birthday, and soon voted for Ronald Reagan. Yes, I remember it well and long for the good ole days. RDTF, thanks for the reminder. Blackbird.

I recalled a story about some murders in the 70's in a house owned by Jabbar. Here is what I found;

"On January 18, 1973, a group of several Nation of Islam members set out for a house which was being used by Khaalis in Washington DC. This was the townhouse of LA Lakers' star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Khaalis was not at home, so the people in the house were attacked. Seven members of Khaalis' family were killed. Four of the victims were babies, aged between 9 days and 22 months. These had been drowned in a bathtub and a sink. Khaalis's wife was shot but survived, albeit paralyzed."

I remember this when I was in HS. I didn't know what it was about but I always remembered the name B'nai B'rith. Afterward, Mayor Walter Washington retired Marion Barry was elected and the rest of DC went to hell from that point.

Here's Amazon's biographical note about the producer-director of Messenger of God: Akkad would also make Lion of the Desert and executive-produce the Halloween pictures. He died in the November 2005 terrorist bombings in Jordan.

I wonder if that was the bombing where they blew up a wedding reception?

Let's see, one of them is the NATO scimitar and the other is the Warsaw Pact scimitar, right?

In centimeters, of course.

Is this film "moHAMed: messenger from allah" any good? I never heard of it. I think I would like to watch it since it ticked them off. I got it a few months ago out of curiosity. It's fairly boring, shows Mo in a reverntial way, as you might expect. Basically a whitewash of history.

Can't understand this guy's gripe thouhg. Mohammed is never shown, in accordance with Islam, and you see parts of the movie from his viewpoint, the camera being him. Frankly, this technique didn't work well in my opinion. Anthony Quinn is one of the stars.

I remember this whole thing. It was actually reported on tv. That was when I still watched the evening news religiously.

Anthony Quinn played mo. It was a big production but has rarely been seen because of the reactions of the Insane.

Hmmm, the Religion of Peace struck in 1977. If we would have looked into our crystal ball to forsee the future.....
