3 Officers Indicted In Groom Shooting (NYC grand jury decides to bring charges against cops)

March 16, 2007

NEW YORK -- Three of five officers involved in a 50-bullet shooting that left a man dead on his wedding day have been indicted.

The grand jury decided to bring charges against Officer Marc Cooper, 39, Detective Michael Oliver, 35, and Undercover Officer Gescard Isnora, 28.

The exact charges were unknown.

Oliver fired 31 shots in the incident by reloading and emptying his 9mm pistol. Isnora fired 11 shots, and Cooper fired four shots.

"He has been indicted. He has been asked to surrender on Monday," said Paul Martin, who represents Cooper. He did not know what charges were brought against Cooper.

The lawyer for Isnora also said his client was indicted. "He is very upset, but he is confident that once he has his day in court he will be vindicated," Isnora attorney Philip Karasyk told The Associated Press.

"I am disappointed my client was indicted. But it was not unexpected given the forum we are in," said Oliver's lawyer, James Culleton.

It was not immediately known if other officers were also charged.

The decision came nearly four months after Sean Bell, 23, was shot and killed and two of his friends, Trent Benefield, 23, and Joseph Guzman, 31, were wounded.

The Rev. Al Sharpton said the charges marked an important first step in the fight for justice in the case.

"Since Nov. 25th, we have battled together. Today is a major step in that battle, whether it will be a step forward, time will tell. But one thing that we can say, if you stay together and you fight, you can do what is necesary to protect children," Sharpton said at a news conference.

A Grand Jury will indict a ham sandwich. They are worthless and should be abolished.

And the victim (all sympathy to him) was visiting a strip club the night before he was to be married. He is not being criticized for this.

By contrast, the Duke Lacrosse team is made out to be hooligans because they hired a stripper.

Same press, different takes.

Malcom X was right when he said the media is the most powerful force in the country, because it can make the innocent guilty, and the guilty innocent.

Ramos, Campean, Brugman, Sipes and Hernandez all thought the same thing.

Unbelievable!! So, that's how it is. You threaten to riot and commit violence if it doesn't go your way, and POOF, here ya go, on a silver platter. As I said before, unbelievable. They should have let them riot...then picked them off one by lousy one.

It's essentially been mob-rule in America since the Rodney King incident. Threaten to riot, commit violence and tear stuff and you'll get whatever you want. If someone tried to get white folks riled up like that, the FBI would be him like bark on a tree.

I'm not sure how this makes sense, if the officers fired recklessly, that means they all did. How can there be only 3 indictments, either they all are indicted or nobody is.

The other... racial-profiling.

This is the (only) time a strike by law enforcement officers is appropriate.

Well, we all know how peacefully the city would have taken the news if they weren't convicted. /sarc

None of these cops should have a job any longer (if they should serve any time is another subject).

But they fired recklessly and approached a situation in an aggressive and threatening manner....when it did not call for such (from what I've read on this situation to date).

In that part of the city, approaching a car with guns out announcing you are police officers is a car-jacking MO just waiting to be played out.

They could have easily called in a marked black and white to the scene (and followed them until one arrived). They wanted to play cowboys.....and then couldn't shoot straight to boot when the sh*t hit the fan.....(and the led was only going one way).

Hubby served on a grand jury. You cannot believe the ignorance of some of the jurors.......or maybe you would.

Each time he would come home beyond infuriated at how the jurors were easily led with no independent thought of their own.

"Malcolm X was right when he said the media is the most powerful force in the country, because it can make the innocent guilty, and the guilty innocent."

Especially when the viewing audience is ignorant and gullible.

The can make the innocent APPEAR to be guilty, and the guilty APPEAR to be innocent, but I understand his point.

Not in the least; liberals hate the police; the police should leave them to the criminals.
