That has always been my point on this, especially with entitlements such as SSI. Seems to me that's where our rights are ignored. We don't complain about SSI, yet we do complain about required federal ID's for such.

That said, congress does have the power to tax. The best possible ID's should be used for that.
And states should require the best ID possible for voting.
The passport thing is already being enforced at the borders, as it should be. National Sales tax or flat tax alleviates the need for ID in that regard as well.
