WHITBY, Ont. (CP) - Finance Minister Jim Flaherty says while the Conservatives are ready for an election, he believes Monday's budget will be difficult for opposition parties to vote down.
Flaherty says the federal budget he's set to present will work to resolve the fiscal imbalance with the provinces, and will tackle issues important to families.
Speaking at a sporting goods store in Whitby, Ont., today, Flaherty said the budget will allocate money to the environment, infrastructure in cities and tax cuts.
He says the budget will also address poverty in the country and introduce a working income tax benefit for those on welfare trying to get into the workforce.
Flaherty says the budget will also resolve equalization and transfer issues between the provinces and will present a long-term funding arrangement for provinces so they can plan their budgets in advance.
The finance minister, who was buying new skates for his son - a twist on a tradition of buying new shoes that precedes the budget - says he expects cities will be pleased by a gas tax announcement.

What about Income Trust tax changes? As it is now the income trusts will end in four years. Allegedly, this was to recover 500 million C$ but investors lost 22 billion C$.
Actually, the purpose of the change was to pump more money into the provinces that have there resources currently in trusts by screwing over US citizens and those investors living in Ontario.
Please send me a FReepmail to get on or off this Canada ping list.
I was hoping the Minister would buy some new runners, on sale at WalMart. /half sarc
