The applications of some staffers were not approved. They included certain individuals with special skills and those in difficult-to-fill positions that required immediate replacement. That would be the staffers who write copy from the AP wire and the op-ed writers.

Depending on the individual circumstances; getting a buyout for resigning is like winning a lottery. I bet that most of those who were disqualified feel gypped.

Is the numerology behind the number of layoffs significant? Paging Calypso Louie, paging Dale Gribble...

"Because the buyout was oversubscribed, we were able to avoid layoffs."
It appears that even liberal "rats" can still see a sinking ship and try to get off before it goes under.

Hope they don't fire Jeff Jacoby. He's the only conservative they've got.
To: Bobkk47
They'll just suspend him on trumped-up charges before any significant event.

avoid layoffs, which would have affected talented people recently recruited to the Globe.
They hire first (less salary) and then offer buyouts to long term, higher salary employees.
Then comes the reason for less profits - due to the cost of buyouts. And the wheel of deception goes round and round.

When these job reductions are completed, the Globe will continue the ambitious journalism that brings so many readers to our newspaper and website every day. Terrific libspeak on display.
