No love lost on ferrets, poll finds

SURVEY NIPS PLANS TO MAKE THEM LEGAL PETS

Almost everyone in California knows what a ferret is. And most think the creatures should remain illegal, according to a new poll that has ferret lovers frowning - and some at each other's necks - across the state.

As it turns out, same-sex marriage (43percent) rates higher in California than legalizing those pointy-nosed polecat descendants.

"Only 38 percent favor legalization. That's kind of absurd," said Pat Wright, who founded Ferrets Anonymous in 1993 and directed a fundraising campaign to pay for the $6,000 Field Research poll. "I thought California was more of a live-and-let-live state. If we had proposed legalized gay marriage or marijuana, we would've gotten a higher number."

This is all very bad news for Wright and the others who sought a ballot measure to legalize ferrets as pets - as they are in every state except California and Hawaii.

Ferrets are kind of cute, but they stink to high heaven.

If they are made legal here it would take all the fun/sting out of calling someone a "ferret-faced weasel". Ya know?

I guess the California Legislature regrets the resemblance between them and the Ferrets.

Of course the ferret is far more attractive, and has an endearing way of slinking around the corridors of power.

Ferrets are domesticated weasels. They look cute with those face masks of theirs... and they can get into anything if allowed to.

Maybe she should commission another poll to ask about legalizing gay doper ferrets?

I had a pet ferret when my family lived in Texas. We found a good home for it before moving to California.

The resemblence between "Rose" the ferret, and Gray Davis was amazing!

They only stink if you let them! I have 5 wuzzles in a sizeable cage in my living room (off from the main area), and you'd never know they were there. The animals themselves don't stink. If you let their cage get crapped up, THAT reaks.

Ferrets are much maligned in the annals of pets. Kalifornia banned them due to an "incident" where someone's child was supposedly killed in their crib whilst it slept by a ferret. I've owned many ferrets in my day, and that is just ludicrous! They shouldn't be allowed around little kids anyway, as I'd be more worried about the child hurting the ferret. The most tearing up my ferts do involve the insoles of shoes and the undersides of sofas. Otherwise, they're the most fun pets I've had.

I'm a dog person by nature, and my golden gets along great with the little ones, but for the money (usually $60 at the local SPCA), you can't beat the laughs these critters give you as they run around.

I had friends with ferrets (in California no less). They are definitely cute when they hop up and down on their hind legs.

The worst they got up to was some toe nipping. I understand NYC banned them due to a rabies scare (unrelated to the actual ferrets?).

As a loving ferret owner, I think California needs to wake up. But then, it's California, so I guess I understand the lunacy.

I guess Rudy will take California... they see eye-to-eye on ferret legislation.

Remember the big kerfuffle with the clip of Rudy on the radio defending anti-ferret legislation.

Ferrets are indoor animals. It's retardedly rare to have a case of rabies in a ferret, and due to their small size, rabies would ravage them VERY quickly. If a ferret got outdoors, they would likely not make it past 6 hours depending on the weather. Here in FL, during the summer, considering they have no way to perspire, a ferret would succumb to heatstroke in less than 30 minutes.

And yes, toe nipping does happen. I had to teach my family that biting of any kind was strictly verboten, and if they happened to be a nip recipient, they were to immediately scruff the fert and snip them on the nose. They learn VERY quick, and we've been bite-free for a long time.

The absolute worst part of being a ferret owner is "accidents." I do my very best to ensure they use their litter boxes, but sometimes they'll get the inkling to just go when they damn well please. It's usually in a nondescript corner, but cleaning in that tight space is the hard part.

I love my ferts with all my heart. They're great pets, they are very affectionate, incredibly intelligent and they know you by your voice. Kalifornia is just doing the typical knee-jerk BS they've always done.
