British troops arrived near the compound and within 20 minutes began to shoot in various directions. Umm... are they sure they were not lighting off firecrackers?

Of course the Brits haven't attacked the Iranian consulate.
But don't kid yourself the Iranians will claim an attack on their consulate to justify the sacking of the British embassy in Tehran. Watch for it, it's coming.

Interesting development. There seems to be a need for the Mullahs to ratchet this even higher, probably internal polling shows growing support. They will most likely continue to push the boundry but it might just blow up in their faces, one can only hope.

In the film "Amistad," the British commander sent word to then President Van Buren that he was right, the slave fortress in Sierra Leone, in fact did not exist. The film showed an intense bombardment of same underway. I suggest that, rather than an Iranian consulate in Basra, the British guns be turned on Iran refining capacity on Kharg Island.

Perhaps genning up their own ex post facto justification for the hostage taking: I would expect this to be used to be used to justify the bullying to their own people -- perhaps to raise some sort of patriotic spirit.
*sigh* - why is it so hard to the 'civilized world to develop and keep a backbone? One cruise missile leveling a government building in Tehran would be sufficient. Several more if they opted to kill the hostages.

Shoot in various directions? Like they didn't aim or something? Maybe it makes more sense in Farsi.

If the Brits want to get their troops back....just start lighting off an Iranian gasoline or oil storage tank, or two, every day until they appear.

I guess the fact that the Iranian state media claims Iran has an outpost in Iraq, dispels this myth that the Iranians aren't involved in Iraq.
