Bush bypasses Senate to name ambassador

By JENNIFER LOVEN, Associated Press Writer 7 minutes ago

President Bush named Republican fundraiser Sam Fox as U.S. ambassador to Belgium on Wednesday, using a maneuver that allowed him to bypass Congress where Democrats had derailed Fox's nomination.

Democrats had denounced Fox for his 2004 donation to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. The group's TV ads, which claimed that Sen. John Kerry exaggerated his military record in Vietnam, were viewed as a major factor in the Massachusetts Democrat losing the election.

Recognizing Fox did not have the votes to obtain Senate confirmation, Bush withdrew the nomination last month. On Wednesday, with Congress out of town for a spring break, the president used his power to make recess appointments to put Fox in the job without Senate confirmation.

This means Fox can remain ambassador until the end of the next session of Congress, effectively through the end of the Bush presidency.

Bush also used his recess appointment authority to make Andrew Biggs deputy director of Social Security. The president's earlier nomination of Biggs, an outspoken advocate of partially privatizing the government's retirement program, was rejected by Senate Democrats in February.

Fox, a 77-year-old St. Louis businessman, gave $50,000 to the Swift Boat group. He is national chairman of the Jewish Republican Coalition and was dubbed a "ranger" by Bush's 2004 campaign for raising at least $200,000. He is founder and chairman of the Clayton, Mo.-based Harbour Group, which specializes in the takeover of manufacturing companies

I’m just fed up with the Dems doing everything they can to obstruct anything and everything the administration wants to accomplish. If they want to filibuster a supreme court nominee fine, but make them filibuster it, not just threaten and thereby win by default.

I’m toward the MSM/Lefties like I am toward Iran. Let ‘em play their silly games, but make sure they pay a price for their childish ways.

“Here’s my apology. W shows some cajones at long last.”

This meme is beyond TIRED!

-
HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE:

—After being attacked by terrorists (via the taking of hostages), Carter and Reagan pay the Iranian regime BILLIONS to release the hostages.

—After being attacked by terrorists, Reagan pulls the Marines out of Lebanon.

—After defeating Hussein in Kuwait, Bush 41 follows Powell’s advice and ends the conflict before completing the job (thousands of Kurds/Shiites are slaughtered as a result).

—After being attacked multiple times by terrorists, Clinton withdraws from Somalia and later fires a few rockets at some empty tents.

—AFTER BEING ATTACKED ON 9/11/01, PRESIDENT GEORGE W BUSH ACTUALLY TAKES THE FIGHT TO THE TERRORISTS IN BOTH AFGHANISTAN AND IRAQ, FREEING 50 MILLION SOULS IN THE PROCESS . . . He fightS the good fight in MANY hot spots all over the world! Simultaneously, the President has cut taxes repeatedly and implemented pro-growth economic policies that have given us an economy/employment rate that is the envy of the world!

Again, REAL MEN lead with vision and courage, and they do so by thinking with their brain not their genitalia!

[BTW: If you’re referring to the so-called “new tone”, just remember who pioneered this approach: Ronald Reagan. Newt Gingrich used a different communication strategy with disastrous results — his likability rating is still in the sewer (which is why he will NEVER run for much less be elected as president)!

Conversely, GWB actually learned something from the master . . . which is why, despite the war and constant criticism, he still has a JA rating around 40% (Rasmussen, Battleground and IBD/TIPP — the only INDEPENDENT pollsters still polling) and a LIKABILITY RATING over 60% (Battleground Poll) . . . ALL other WAR presidents have either averaged JA ratings in the 20s, or were unable to run for much less win re-election — FDR died before facing the unpleasant war/post-war decisions that Truman was forced to make!]

Nope, I won't apologize- he has been a wimp when dealing with the Dems. Maybe, he has now realized that rats are not his friends and neither do they want to work nice like with the President.

I am proud that he is showing toughness though... hope he keeps it up.

“Ugly, this is going to ugly.”

You will never hear about Fox again. The RATS knew he was going to do this. All these recess appointments are normal.

I don’t think it will get ugly .. there’s nothing the Congress can do .. This is exactly what Bush did with Bolton .. and the Congress couldn’t and didn’t try to do anything about it.

I was quick to jump on Bush's case when he folded before the dems, so I'll offer an apology in this particular case.

Sure hope that it's the start of a positive trend for Dubya.

Great Post! In addition, with his entire focus on the biggest issue of our lifetimes he has little time or ammo left to fight Dems on domestic issues.

The Surge is proof enough he has more than enough Testosterone to lead.

Pray for W and Our Troops

Yeah Bush fights. This is a good one that really puts it up the back of the Dims.

But I have to say it is quite hilarious to see people calling for others to apologize to Bush. I voted for him twice and gave money -when he lays down he should be criticized. The Bushbot whinning is so shrill it says alot.

At least some here have apologized for forgetting that President Bush is now, and has always been a man with unquestioned courage.

The ones who say 'finally' and something about male genitalia do it to make themselves feel good......not because there's any truth to it..

This is actually a far more positive thread than I've seen in a long time on this sinking forum......

Maybe some have finally figured it out and have left the Donner Party?
