Giuliani stands by support of publicly-funded abortions
CNN ^ | 4/4/07 | Staff

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (CNN) -- Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani told CNN Wednesday he supports public funding for some abortions, a position he advocated as mayor and one that will likely put the GOP presidential candidate at odds with social conservatives in his party.

"Ultimately, it's a constitutional right, and therefore if it's a constitutional right, ultimately, even if you do it on a state by state basis, you have to make sure people are protected," Giuliani said in an interview with CNN's Dana Bash in Florida's capital city.

-

Giuliani also vowed to appoint conservative judges to the bench, though denied such a promise was a "wink and a nod" to conservatives in support of overturning Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision on abortion.

"A strict constructionist judge can come to either conclusion about Roe against Wade," he said. "They can look at it and say, 'Wrongly decided thirty years ago, whatever it is, we'll over turn it.' [Or] they can look at it and say, 'It has been the law for this period of time, therefore we are going to respect the precedent.' Conservatives can come to that conclusion as well. I would leave it up to them. I would not have a litmus test on that."

so long as Roe is the law of the land - what can you do? what are you going to tell poor women who get medical care through public assistance?

Written like a true liberal.

Why in the world should taxpayers dollars be given to women to kill unborn children? How is that even an example of limited government?

If you think these comments aren't going to eliminate millions of votes for this liberal SOB, you're crazy.

You have no credibility primarily because of your offensive tagline. Add several stupid comments on this thread, and there you go...

what is offensive about it ?

I am prolife. but I am willing on overlook some social issues to find the right President for the global war on islamic terrorism.

I am mainly a War on Terror Voter, low taxes and cutting government spending is secondary. Everything else is important, but im going with my heart and the issues that are crucial.

I am prolife.

Only in words. In action you're using your franchise to support NARAL and its political empowerers.

President Bush on the other hand makes Lyndon Johnson look like fiscal moderate.

RINO Rudy isn't any better:

Mr. Giuliani said the surplus from the current fiscal year, which ends on June 30, is projected to be $856 million, a record amount caused largely by higher-than-expected tax revenues from robust profits on Wall Street. He said for the first time that he wanted to use $99 million of that money to help the city adapt to the new strict Federal welfare rules by paying for child care, job training and other programs.

Source: New York Times, Clifford Levy, 5/9/97

Giuliani allowed spending to increase significantly faster than inflation during four of his last five years in office - and another big increase was in store for fiscal 2002 before the World Trade Center attack forced the city into an austerity mode.

Source: FISCALWATCH MEMO July 20, 2004

Not all that well. According to New York's Independent Budget Office, total budgeted expenditures grew from $31.8 billion in 1995 (Rudy's first budget year) to $44.6 billion in 2003, an increase of 40.3%. By comparison, the inflation rate from January 1995 to January 2003 was 20.89% according to this inflation rate calculator. Thus, New York City's spending under Rudy grew at a rate twice that of inflation.

Perhaps the biggest difference is on fiscal issues. Giuliani, who lost interest in curtailing the growth of city government in his latter years, left behind a fiscal catastrophe—a $6.4 billion deficit proportionately bigger than the hole that caused the 1975 fiscal shortfall. --- Jacob Weisberg, Slate magazine 2/21/07

In the end, liberals always turn out to be appeasers and tax and spenders, notwithstanding any lying rhetoric to the contrary.

Everything else is important, but im going with my heart and the issues that are crucial

As the Bible says: "The heart is deceitful above all things."

The abortionists have killed tens of millions more Americans than the terrorists have. The internal threats to the security and freedom of Americans are exponentially higher than any external threat could ever be.

He wants to keep the tax cuts.

Another thing people seem to be overlooking.

Leadership qualities. Rudy has it. The war time leadership personality.

A) He didn’t implement gay marriage. That’s a flat-out lie, and one that I noticed your were unable to back up with any facts. Romney would have been breaking the law by being in contempt of court if he stood in the way of gay marriage after the Supreme Court’s ruling.

Instead, Romney took legal avenues to get gay marriage outlawed. He took action to make sure MA wouldn’t grant marriage licenses to out-of-state couples. And he led an effort to amend the constitution by referendum to outlaw gay marriage...and then sued the legislature for trying to prevent the issue from going to the people for a vote.

B)”the radical gay line”? Puh-leaze. That point doesn’t even deserve a response.

C)I keep hearing the claim that Romney appointed “pro-abortion” judges. Can you name any of them, or is this more unsubstantiated drivel?

abortion is legal in this country. even if Roe were tossed (as it should be, since its bad judicial law) - how many states would outlaw first trimester abortions for adult women? 2, maybe 3? Utah, Mississippi.

what’s your goal in that enviroment then, to “punish” poor women who would seek to have an abortion? to what end? having failed to use the vote and the legislative process in the States to outlaw abortion, what is the goal of denying access to it to poor women?

Then tell me how the executive branch can force an override of a veto by 85% of the legislative branch.

Waiting...

Very bad move by Giuliani.

It's very discouraging. There were some pro-lifers on the fence for Rudy, hoping that he'd at least denounce abortion and admit he was wrong or move to the right on the issue.

Not only does Rudy remain vehemently pro-abortion, he wants taxpayers to fund it as well. That destroys his "fiscal conservative" credentials as well.

I don't think Rudy will survive the GOP primaries. Conservative activists will be out in force. The days of compromising with the Left are over, and I think conservatives are tired of Republicans who want to act like Democrats.

You're acting rather dim.

If you're the executive and it's right, if it's your duty, sign the bill. If they override it, that's their responsibility.

Surely, you're smart enough to understand that by supporting a candidate, you're giving your stamp of approval to his stated policies.

Good. Let him prove it for about twenty years, and then come talk to us about supporting him for office.

Yep, using our TAX DOLLARS FOR FEDERAL FUNDING FOR ABORTION--that's real conservatism there,,,,bigger bureaucracy and more taxes. Just think of all the new Federals jobs he would create to administer his national abortion policy. /s

JulieAnnie is a liberal's DREAM--BOTH PARTIES TO THE LEFT OF CENTER!!!

Take a hike, Rudy.

Boy, that’s a stretch. Romney’s plan requires that everybody have health insurance. Based upon income, the people without health insurance can apply for state assistance to help pay their insurance premiums.

And somehow you have twisted that to mean that his plan includes tax-payer funded abortions?

You must be really getting nervous about your guy losing to Romney. You’re starting to lose your composure. ;-)
