WASHINGTON -- In a Capitol Hill debate about global warming touted by its moderator as a "smackdown" between former House speaker Newt Gingrich and Senator John F. Kerry of Massachusetts, Gingrich praised Kerry's recently released book about environmentalism, acknowledged that global warming is real, and offered what amounted to an unexpected apology for his party's inaction on curtailing greenhouse gas emissions. "I'm not going to stand up here and defend our failure to lead," said Gingrich, who is considering a run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008 and plans to release a book in the fall burnishing his environmental credentials. "There has to be a green conservatism."
The standing-room-only debate, staged yesterday in an ornate Senate hearing room, offered an indication that even diehard conservatives like Gingrich, who stepped down as speaker in 1998, are abandoning their skepticism on global warming. As recently as two years ago, Gingrich ridiculed the notion that humans are causing the earth to warm, but yesterday he said the evidence was "sufficient."
"We have now passed the tipping point of that argument," he said yesterday. The former Georgia congressman even allowed that he agreed with "about 60 percent" of "This Moment on Earth," a recently published book Kerry co wrote with his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry.

(6) If the ice caps were really melting at a rapid rate, would it not make more sense to construct waterways to largely uninhabited below sea level areas such as the Qattara Depression to help contain the runoff?
If Greenland melted down completely, 88% of the excess water produced could be contained by flooding the uninhabited Qatarra Depression in nortwest Egypt, producing thousands of miles of valuable lakefront property, generating electrical power as water flowed from the Medditerranean to the depression and potentially turning much of the surrounding Sahara Desert into arable land.
It took Greenland 18,000 years to accumulate as much ice as it has now. How long do you think it will take it to melt?
thanks link works, sad I USED to be a Newt supporter. Newt should know better, the science is NOT settled yet not by a long shot. Newt is pandering.
If we take all of our candidates and put them together, we have a gun-grabbing, tax-raising, abortion funding, high spending, socialized medicine, environmental extremist.
Newt, you just lost me.
The world IS warming up - the data proves it. But it has warmed up in the past and cooled off in the past.
There is no conclusive data that the current warming trend is due to human agency. And at one time in the world’s past, global climates were far warner than today, and far colder.
For every geoclimatologist who claims its oour fault, you can find others who blame it on solar cycles, etc.
Should we be careful with oour use of energy? Absolutely. But we shouldn’t compromise our liefstyle and society and economy on what doesn’t even reach the level of an hypothesis at this point.
Bye, Newt!
I’m done with Newt.
I should have known better after his love fest with Clintoon, but to watch him buy into the GW hoax seals it for me.
Here’s another question for your list:
What is the evidence that the recent increase in levels of CO2 is not a DESIRABLE return to a more healthy percentage? The geologically “recent” evolution of some plants to use C4 Photosynthesis provides evidence that the plant kingdom finds current levels of CO2 are too low.
Are plants smarter than AlGore?
Hmmmmm....
It's proof to me,
You must agree,
He's now become,
Non-entity.
(From a poem I wrote in '69)
” GOP presidential candidates are coming down with newt-in-mouth disease. “
When Newt agreed to GW being ‘urgent’ during the
non-debate debate,
he agreed to all the tax increases Kerry and the
Democrates will impose,
Thanks Newt,
now I’ll ask for 160hrs a week at work.
Go away Gingrich.
This is why the party is called “the stupid party”.
Sheeeeesh! What a huge disappointment, newt!
Newt is trying to replace John McCain as the Democrats’ favorite Republican. I guess he thinks it’s an honor.
Newt: Read my tag line and then just go away.
I’ve had it with his warm and fuzzy with our domestic enemy/traitor and have lost respect for his intellect. Expect him to travel to our foreign enemy Iran with Pelousy next.
“I’m not going to stand up here and defend our failure to lead”
Uh, Newt, what did happen to the Contract With America, anyway?
Like your poem.
What a disappointment.
I think that a lot of “conservatives” once they get sting by the libs, think they have to get in touch with their innner selves and commune with the left on issues.
Tom DeLay is an example of a great conservative who NEVER changed. So is “B-1 Bomber Dornan” who was screwed by illegal alien votes in Kalipornia.
He wrote a book before he wroted against it.
I knew when I heard about this yesterday it would be a disaster. Putting any weight in these two clowns talking about Global Warming is like hearing two freshmen psych majors debate the finer points of Manic Depression.
jon carry is 40% right?
Newt, we hardly knew ya...
Don’t blame Newt. George W. Bush and Exxon have adopted this approach too—admit the obvious (temps are up, CO2 is up) and then join the debate over how impossible it is to get the entire world to go along with limiting carbon emissions. It will take a few more years for science to fully debunk the extremely simplistic theories behind manmade global warming.
In the meantime, Kyoto has proven to be an absolute disaster. Canada would have to either pull every car and truck off her highways or else close every coal-fired plant to meet her commitments there. I’ve read that a major multilateral legislative think tank will recommend that the Kyoto goals be moved back to the year 2100.
We’re fighting a rearguard action here, a strategic retreat until the opposition runs out of gas (pun intended).
