WASHINGTON -- In a Capitol Hill debate about global warming touted by its moderator as a "smackdown" between former House speaker Newt Gingrich and Senator John F. Kerry of Massachusetts, Gingrich praised Kerry's recently released book about environmentalism, acknowledged that global warming is real, and offered what amounted to an unexpected apology for his party's inaction on curtailing greenhouse gas emissions. "I'm not going to stand up here and defend our failure to lead," said Gingrich, who is considering a run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008 and plans to release a book in the fall burnishing his environmental credentials. "There has to be a green conservatism."
The standing-room-only debate, staged yesterday in an ornate Senate hearing room, offered an indication that even diehard conservatives like Gingrich, who stepped down as speaker in 1998, are abandoning their skepticism on global warming. As recently as two years ago, Gingrich ridiculed the notion that humans are causing the earth to warm, but yesterday he said the evidence was "sufficient."
"We have now passed the tipping point of that argument," he said yesterday. The former Georgia congressman even allowed that he agreed with "about 60 percent" of "This Moment on Earth," a recently published book Kerry co wrote with his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry.

OK, I give up! He also criticised the Gonzales and made noises I didn’t like about legalising illegals. Adios Newt! Newt jumped on the big conservative shark and is now shark caca.
Newt is nutz ping.
Now I understand. I’m waiting for clarification before making a conclusion on that part. I’m hopeful he supports the fair tax or something like it.
He’s lost my vote if he runs.
“Global Warming” is nothing more than a socialist power grab and money making fraud and scam. That Gingrich “buys in” is interesting and curious. Looks like he is selling out full throttle. How long before he comes out in favor of open borders?
et tu Newt-eh?
Have IQ’s just dropped suddenly overnight?
Looks like there may be a few more Dems other than Bill Clinton who make Newt “weak in the knees” when he is around them.
More info on this thread.
Thanks.
A51, you can scratch Newt off as a potential rival to your guy.
Hoping to hear from the NewtBots who slammed me for months when I called him a schmuck and a phony and a person of low character.
He is only half wrong. It was stupid of him to give one inch on the whole global warming charade etc. I was surprised he provided no countervailing science about the cyclical nature of the earth's warming and the sun's involvement. That was wrong.
However, there is nothing wrong with being a Teddy Roosevelt republican. As an admirer of Teddy, I wish we had more of them. There is nothing wrong with being a conservative and being concerned about conserving the earth and its resources. In fact, it makes perfect sense. He is right that there is a lack of leadership on our side in becoming free from our oil dependence.
Having said that, I think Newt could make the Teddy Roosevelt plea for conservation and energy independence without discussing global warming at all and, certainly, without EVER agreeing with Jon Carry (FGS). Why can't we say --- it is in our national security interests to become free of Arab oil? What are we waiting for? Let's do it.
After 9/11, with a GOP president and a GOP congress, why didn't we begin to build nuclear plants, clean-coal plants etc? It truly is a leadership issue. Where is it? Where is our Teddy?
I think GW can be be taken out of the equation entirely. It is in our best interests to become free from our energy dependence on the throat cutters whether the temps are rising or not.
We should have made this issue our own on OUR OWN TERMS years ago.
I hope someone does it the right way. Newt had the perfect opportunity and blew it.
John Kerry has never been right about anything.
I had hope for Newt, but now....
Gore, Gingrich and Jean Cerri: great physicists all.
Newt is
Please ping me if you find one Ive missed.
OKSooner and I are doing the POGW
ping list while xcamel is on vacation.
It’s a mild variant in remission - no more of a threat than Rudy’s prostate cancer currently is for him.
FWIW, I think Fred let it out now in preparation for a run.
et tu, Newte???!!!
Well, Newt just knocked himself off my list of eligable candidates.
