It was just announced on the "Mike and the Mad Dog Show" on WFAN (Imus's home base): Imus is out of a job on radio as well.

He will not even be on the air tomorrow.

Bruce Gordon, former head of Black Entertainment Television and member of the CBS board of directors, was behind this hit.

Simply ridiculous. Imus is a creep and he handled himself poorly, but he didn't do anything that deserved this.

First, even calling this incident "Racism" is extreme hyperbole. Imus' original comment about the Rutgers women being "hos" was nothing more than an off color joke. It was rude, crass, and perhaps mildly offensive but the way the MSM has spun this thing one would think that he launched into a Michael Richards-style n-word tirade on the air. He didn't. He simply told an off color joke.

Second, exactly who did the joke hurt? Nobody. Not even the Rutgers team, which has gotten tons of free sympathetic publicity on national television out of this incident. More people know about the Rutgers team this year than Tennessee, the actual WINNERS of the Final Four tournament!

Third, it's unlikely anyone from the Rutgers team even heard Imus' comment until after Al Sharpton opened his fat mouth, and the lazy race hustling MSM rallied around him calling for Imus' head. If anything, Sharpton gave Imus' insult 1,000,000 times the broadcast it would have ever gotten on its own if the media didn't rally to his cause.

Fourth, this entire episode came right in the middle of Imus' charity fundraising drive and will undoubtedly have an adverse effect on its collection, and that just plain sucks because depsite all of Imus' own faults pretty much everybody agrees that his charity work was a good thing. When is the last time Jesse and Al have ever done anything charitable or raised money for children?

"Call it what you will. He’s an opportunistic race baiter."

I agree. I don't how this is any different than the Dixie Chicks. They both said something offensive to a lot of people and they paid the price. CBS is a business - if they think the brouhaha will cost them money, right or wrong, he will be gone. Lots of DJ's (Bob Graham, those guys who broadcast someone having sex in a church, etc.) have been fired for going over the line. Don's in the bigs, he knows how it goes.

Here's the letter I just sent the radio station...

To Whom It May Concern,

I find it most ironic that the cancellation of the one show on WFAN that I do NOT listen to is the reason that I will never again tune into WFAN.

I have been a fan of your station since the format change in the 1980's. I am particularly a big fan of Joe Benigno's mid-day program, but tune in at all hours of the day and night for a quick fix of "20/20 Sports". The one WFAN program I never developed interest in, though, was Imus in the Morning. I always preferred Howard Stern, and since his departure to satellite radio, Opie and Anthony. The few times I caught the Imus simulcast on MSNBC, I simply did not develop an interest in listening or viewing his program any further.

As a self-confessed news junkie, it was impossible for me to miss the news of the controversy caused by Mr. Imus' remarks last week. I am the first to admit that said remarks were tasteless and disrespectful to the achievements of the Rutgers athletes. The over-reaction to the comments, however, make me embarrassed to be an American living in the 21st century.

Allow me to let you in on something...Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are jokes. They have made a living profiting off of race-baiting, manipulating the media, and bilking well-intentioned people out of their funds. Nobody other than politicians and your fellow members of the media take them seriously. Nobody. Every African-American friend and acquaintance of mine who I have discussed them with feel the exact same way that I do.

I particularly am offended at the timing of Mr. Imus' termination. Whether one is a fan or not, Imus' annual fundraisers to help children's charities are very admirable, and at the very least, the termination should have been delayed until the end of this years drive. I would hope that WFAN and CBS are considering providing a generous donation to Imus' fund to offset the slowdown in fundraising as a result of his termination.

So as we part ways, I would like to sincerely thank you for twenty years of quality sports radio. However, all good things must come to an end and from now on, I will be down the dial on 1050 ESPN Radio from here on out.

But, Imus is a white male. If you’re a white male, even if you’re a liberal or Giuliani Republican-type, you’ll be held to different standard than someone that is a member of PC-protected minority group.

IMUS should say that the NBC news anchor and “journalists” were the most racist, synchophantic liberals he’d ever known.

Yes, quite an incendiary, powerful statement from Howlin. I believe there’s an element of truth to what she says. Whether it’s 80/20, 50/50, I’m not sure...

A white man said the words, another white man did the firing (Imus and Moonves).

You are 100 percent correct.Imus bashed Hitlery and isn’t it “convenient” that he won’t be around for the next year during the campaign to speak out against her? She must be celebrating today big time.

Of course not. When it comes to cBS, pandering to a blatant anti-semite is first priority.

It was the black board member of CBS that pushed CBS to fire IMUS.

This is no longer about IMUS, he is the tip of the iceberg of what has been going on too long in this country.....

Jesse Jackson was the first person to be in Durham to dis those college boys and call them names and support this girl.. asked yesterday if he was going to apologize he said no, he doesn't own them anything. Al Sharpton has a long, sick, history of racism and bigotry and I am sick of both those men getting one minute of air time to spew their hatred.

Big Ced from Source Magazine on John Gibson, whoever Big Ced is (!!), says it’s okay in hip-hop music because they are speaking to each other in their own language or some such bs as that...good ole double standard...

The female (black woman) on the show essentially said it’s wrong to say it about the Rutgers women but okay for the non-Rutgers black women...WHAT????

This whole thing is ridiculous.

I was sitting at my desk watching him on the dittocam— just mesmerized ! I mean he does outstanding monologues now and then, but today, today was exceptional. He had come prepared. It wasn’t an off the cuff rant, he had some notes in front of him, probably wrote them last night during show prep. And with those notes as a guide he proceeded logically, step by step, building his case up starting with the Duke lacrosse case. Kudos Rush. You have more than earned your $50,000 for today’s show. Can’t wait to go home and watch the entire show again.

“Blacks did this.”

Howlin, I know you’re smarter than that. Trust me, CBS listened to the advertisers of the show on this one. Once General Motors and Proctor & Gamble dropped Imus, I knew he was done. Remember too that Sharpton and Jesse do NOT represent all of black America.

Remember likewise the many people sportscasters who have been fired for saying far less offensive than Imus. Remember Rush being fired from ESPN?

Regards
Kate
