Ex-generals: Global warming threatens U.S. security

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Global warming poses a "serious threat to America's national security" and the U.S. likely will be dragged into fights over water and other shortages, top retired military leaders warn in a new report.

The report says that in the next 30 to 40 years there will be wars over water, increased hunger instability from worsening disease and rising sea levels and global warming-induced refugees. "The chaos that results can be an incubator of civil strife, genocide and the growth of terrorism," the 35-page report predicts.

"Climate change exacerbates already unstable situations," former U.S. Army chief of staff Gordon Sullivan told Associated Press Radio. "Everybody needs to start paying attention to what's going on. I don't think this is a particularly hard sell in the Pentagon. ... We're paying attention to what those security implications are."

Gen. Anthony "Tony" Zinni, President Bush's former Middle East envoy, says in the report: "It's not hard to make the connection between climate change and instability, or climate change and terrorism."

The report was issued by the Alexandria, Virginia-based, national security think-tank The CNA Corporation and was written by six retired admirals and five retired generals. They warn of a future of rampant disease, water shortages and flooding that will make already dicey areas -- such as the Middle East, Asia and Africa -- even worse.

"Weakened and failing governments, with an already thin margin for survival, foster the conditions for internal conflicts, extremism and movement toward increased authoritarianism and radical ideologies," the report says. "The U.S. will be drawn more frequently into these situations."

It’s not the first to be seen on a tanker. I knew a major from the 11th ACR who had one from Vietnam.

Yes, that’s something Condi should have never opened her mouth about. Possibly Imus’s racial words struck a cord with her.

Lol, I guess the ex Generals think they are important enough that we want to hear their thoughts. /not!

He holds a Master of Arts degree in political science

I might have known. Maybe the Army can be fooled, but academia, at least, put him in his proper place. Political science isn't.

“We will pay to reduce greenhouse gas emissions today, and we’ll have to take an economic hit of some kind. Or we will pay the price later in military terms.”

What was Zinni doing commenting on greenhouse gas, for gosh sakes? He was in charge of CENTCOM and I’m sure not one of their PowePoint slides didn’t include HUMVEE and B2 emissions. But then again, not a whole lot of action took place to hunt down Osama during Clinton’s reign so maybe this fact was part of the reduced emission strategy.

A big mouth about something unrelated to your official area is the sign of an amateur with a huge ego

Untrustworthy

GW’s adminstration has been lousy with people doing that - often counter to Bush’s policies

Slick Willie had the MSM to cover him and Hillary and his staffers and Cabinet

But Slick Willie also would actually bury anyone who strayed from him

Anyone who strayed from FDR ended up in a hot combat zone

One was Eleanor’s riding instructor.....

A Great book and a Fun read!

These former military men became civilians and started making money in the free market. If we follow the money will we find business interests that will benefit from out of control global warming hysterical rantings paying their freight? I’m thinking we will. They have obviously been given a voice by liberal interests.

“Gloabal Warming” boosted the lifestyle of every culture that experienced it previously, what makes General “Jelly beans on his chest” think it will be any different this time ?

I suppose I should start buying stock in Evian, Dasani, and any other bottled-water company...their stock should soon go through the roof! I can see it now. Instead of talking about the price of barrels of oil, we’ll be talking about the price of a barrel of water. /sarcasm/

I agree.

The entire “Global Warming” movement is in the hands of radical Maoist Cultural Revolutionaries, thereby constituting a major threat to the security of the United States.

"Has EVERYONE gone nuts in this country?"

Not everyone. Some of us are just dancing on the edge of the abyss.

It wasn't so long ago that FR Armchair Generals were praising Zinni for criticizing Bush's WOT policies, especially Iraq.

Don't seem to see them around now that the cloak is off.

“What I find insteresting, and I would like to know the circumstances about his Combat Infantry Badge. That is an INFANTRY award, not armor. I’m sure its authorized otherwise it wouldn’t be on his chest, I hope.”

There are several exceptions including:
(1) Any officer whose basic branch is other than infantry who, under appropriate orders, has commanded a line infantry (other than a headquarters unit) unit of brigade, regimental, or smaller size for at least 30 consecutive days is deemed to have been detailed in infantry and is eligible for award of the CIB notwithstanding absence of a written directive detailing that soldier in the infantry, provided all other requirements for the award have been met. Orders directing the officer to assume command will be confirmed in writing at the earliest practicable date.

(2) In addition, any officer, warrant officer, or enlisted man whose branch is other than infantry, who under appropriate orders was assigned to advise a unit listed in (4) and (5) below or was assigned as a member of a White Star Mobile Training Team or a member of MAAG-Laos as indicated in f (l) and (2) below will be eligible for award of the CIB provided all other requirements have been met.
