Christian school to host gay activists

WENHAM -- Breaking with many fellow conservative Christian schools, Gordon College in Wenham will welcome to campus this week a busload of young adults who are sharply critical of the school's policies on homosexuality.

The gay-rights activists have repeatedly been arrested and barred from the campuses of other Christian colleges this year as they travel the country in their effort to call attention to what they view as discriminatory policies and hostile climates on evangelical campuses.

But officials at Gordon, where homosexual activity is barred by campus policy, have agreed to host the group for a series of presentations and conversations, saying they believe it will be good for students to hear a variety of views. The college has held three lectures about homosexuality and morality, the Bible, and science, and is highlighting the visit on its website.

[...]

Loy e-mailed the entire Gordon campus about the visit, declaring that, "Gordon College affirms the historic, orthodox Christian position that homosexual practice is incompatible with the teaching of Scripture. However, the college plans to provide a gracious welcome to our Equality Ride visitors and views this occasion as an important educational opportunity."

[...]

Gordon, with 1,500 students, was founded in 1889 in a Boston church basement as a missionary training school; it grew into a full-fledged college, with some graduate departments, and moved to the North Shore in 1955. All applicants to Gordon College are asked to sign a statement agreeing to "recognize the Bible to be the Word of God and hence fully authoritative in matters of faith and conduct."

Specifically, the statement says, "those acts which are expressly forbidden in Scripture, including fornication, homosexuality, adultery, drunkenness, theft, profanity, and dishonesty, will not be practiced by members of the Gordon community, either on or off campus."

So instead they invite a group of people who do all of those.

Gordon College in Wenham

With a decision such as this, one could hardly call Gordon Christian.

“Gordon College in Wenham will welcome to campus this week a busload of young adults who are sharply critical of the school’s policies on homosexuality.”

It isn’t the worst thing to expose the students to the opposite viewpoint so that they can challenge what they thank. If this school has done its job well then these homosexual activists will have no effect. I think its better to know exactly what your opponents think than to wall yourself off from the world and only deal with those who think like you.

Full discolsure: Gordon is my Alma Marter.

This isn’t necessarily anything new for them. When i was a senior they invited a “pastor” who held similar views on homosexuality to speak. We gave him something of a tough time at question and answer time. As I recall one student asked “What if i made the argument that God created me to find sexual fulfillment with multiple partners?”

He dodged the question completely.

In the same manner that I, a Young Earth Creationist, advocate teaching Evolution along side Creationism, I commend the college for allowing their students to be exposed to the Sodomite agenda. We cannot hide from the world around us...as much as we may disagree, even condemn, its standards of morality.

Yes. Don’t jump on Gordon. They are one of the few, if not the ONLY, Conservative Theological Seminary in Mass. Contrast them with Andover-Newton, where Gays are probably on the Board..

It is not the healthy who need a doctor. It is the sick.

But they are not coming to get healed, they are coming to confront. It is one thing to welcome in someone who is a lost soul, it is another to welcome in someone who is a sworn enemy.

Even a doctor would not advocate that the healthy do anything that would make them SICK!

Or Harvard Divinity, where the basic premise is, “Christianity is bad, and Judaism is bad where it crosses Christianity.”

Of course, I don’t think Andover Newton and Harvard Div. are on this groups list.

(From an earlier post of mine)

My son, home for Easter, told me that his school, Cedarville U., intends to attempt ministering to this group. I expressed my concerns regarding the media event agenda I expect them to pursue. He says they have been very much in prayer for months over this and have been preparing extensively for their arrival. I understand that the school has tracked other schools’ experiences closely in making their own preparations. Their arrival is scheduled for April 19.

Check out the link for a different perspective.

In Jesus’s mind the sick came for repentance, not excuses to perpetuate their “sickness”.
