What the heck is a Chinese student doing with that kind of hardware? Is there some sort of Chinese handbook that says: “as soon as you settle in the American university, seek out a nefarious dealer of illicit firearms, ammunition, and ammo vests/body armor”. I would think a foreign student isn’t here long enough to form that much of a gripe (barring some outside influence).

Exactly. The shooter may have offed himself, or having expended his ammunition was offed by a co-conspirator as planned, or he made a student put on his vest and offed the student.
Because he saw fit to obscure his own ID, I only pray that this was not yet another diversion for something else.
The LEO comunity is much too tight lipped with the info for me to feel comfortable about this situation.
I saw it. The perps were fairly clearly “Chechen” types, up to and including Russian accents, praying to “Allah,” etc. Compared to Beslan in the show. The “Unit” trained up real quick, walked in, and just shot all the bad guys; then the commander tried to sell insurance.

The person you are talking about was on CNN earlier today.The film he had,was showing the police approaching a building where shots were being fired.He followed way behind them,as they approached and entered the building and at that point the filming ended.

Police believe 3 bomb threats on campus last week may have been attempts by the man to test the campus’ security response
Observation 1: This is obviously a hoax. It is impossible for this to happen, because it is illegal to have loaded weapons on the Va. Tech campus! The laws have been enacted!
Observation 2: First shooting was a diversion. After the entire security operation piled on, the gunman was free to have his way.
Observation 3: The shooter killed himself, after killing all he wanted to kill in the school. Then the police (the only ones allowed to be armed) showed up after the threat had eliminated himself, to clean up the mess. The police can’t protect you, and you aren’t allowed to protect yourself.
Observation 4: Knee jerk liberal response, utterly incapable of making the simple observation that one bent on suicide isn’t concerned about laws, already are demanding more laws. (You will be guilty of even twice as many felonies next time!)
Observation 5: We might enact laws to utterly ban guns of all types, everywhere, at all times. Today we have federal and state laws prohibiting the possession, use or trafficing in heroine, yet its possession, use, and trafficing occur continuously, despite all laws.
Observation 6: When new gun control laws are inevitably demanded, no one in the press will ask (demand!) to know why the shooter didn’t obey the laws already prohibiting his actions. Perhaps he needed better education?
I swear, everything that happens in the world could, at least by people on Free Republic, be construed as an act of terrorism by a Muslim extremist. It seems like some people automatically assume that the perpetrator is Muslim and then look for ways to tie that together, such as speculating that the hat was Muslim-related and that, if he was Chinese, then he was a Chinese Muslim. When I was in high school we had a of bomb threats, death threats, and so on. In a pre 9-11 world this same sort of thing happens, but we didn’t look for ways to tie it to Islam.
That said, based on the police press conference I watched earlier, they appear to be hinting at two shooters, seeing as the description of the first shooter doesn’t match the second. They have a “person of interest” that they’ve spoken to, but nothing more. I don’t know what’s going on there. Perhaps they have no evidence against this person, but that wouldn’t explain how or why they have a description. Odds of the two incidents happening the same day would be essentially nil (unless the second shooter heard about the first shooting, and decided to make today his day).

I could be wrong - but I really think that is what happened - Not sure if a Florida driver’s license was involved but it could be.

I was surprised that Keith Oberman on MSNBC seemed to do an accurate coverage of this and reported the killer was a foreign national from China who entered the USA from Shanhai on a student Visa last year. (I believe last year - I could be wrong!)

CaptM says 200. The map I saw seemed to indicate 30-40. I’ll assume CM is from Morgantown WV and has first hand knowledge of the campus.

Governor Kaine Declares State of Emergency to Coordinate Response to VT Shootings

Governor Tim M. Kaine declared a state of emergency in the Commonwealth of Virginia Monday, directing state agencies to take all necessary actions to aid in the response and recovery following today’s shootings at Virginia Tech.
A declaration of emergency allows the Governor to immediately deploy state personnel, equipment, and other resources, and to coordinate state and local response in the immediate aftermath of a tragedy.
“State agencies, including State Police and the Virginia Departments of Health and Emergency Management, are doing everything possible to be of assistance to those who were injured, and those who have lost loved ones in this tragedy,” Governor Kaine said.
The Virginia State Police are on-scene in Blacksburg investigating the shootings in cooperation with local law enforcement. The Department of Health has sent the Chief Medical Examiner and additional personnel to the area to assist with the fatalities.
The Virginia Department of Emergency Management has sent staff to the scene to advise and assist local emergency managers and first responders. The Virginia Emergency Operations Center is coordinating state level assistance. In addition, the state will help coordinate crisis counseling assistance for those in need.
Additional information about the recovery at Virginia Tech will be available online at www.vt.edu.
Separately, Governor Kaine has ordered the lowering of the Virginia state flag in honor of those who were killed or injured in today’s shootings.

Did people on campus know the shooter - do you know? (besides the girlfriend) - has anybody said so?

WTF? He’s here only eight months, and in that time phones in three bomb scares to test security, gets two illicit firearms, an ammo vest (and possibly Kevlar), plus a stack of magazines and ammo?
Something is VERY wrong here. There HAS to be more to this guy.
