If any of the stuff found on his computer is Islamic, we can be assured we’ll never find out what was on computer. It’ll be instantly sent to Trash.

Just look at this abstract of an article co-written by Dr. ISMAIL AX !

Even though all psychiatric disorders do not have the same potential with regard to committing a crime, the number of individuals having psychiatric disorders is gradually going up depending on the increase of crimes and violent behaviors committed in a society. . . . The relation between existence of psychiatric disorder and crime behavior has been significantly emphasized in several earlier studies. In conclusion, it is notable that the rates of committing crime for the individuals with psychiatric disorders are on the rise.

Excellent post!

And if he was following the teachings of Herman Melville he would be running around with a harpoon snaring a big fish.

The point is, when the news of this shooting broke yesterday, the logical first reaction of any moderately well-informed person should have been “is this terrorism?”.

It's a logical question to ask, but it is surpassingly smug to assume that it is the first question to ask.

Given the overwhelming precedents set by past mass shootings in the US, the logical first question would be -- "I wonder what sent the nutjob over the edge?"

Had numerous FReepers asked that question first, they'd have saved themselves the embarrassment of once again spinning out of control without benefit of facts.

Maybe the fumes from the Dry Cleaning business made him crazy. It certainly makes me ill whenever I take my husband’s shirts in!

I am going on record here saying that this writing on the arm will turn out to be:

ISMAIL AK

NOT

ISMAIL AX

See posts 197, 210, 214, 225, 234, and 242.

This is an angle the investigators need to pursue with the school's counseling service, the killer's computer, and Dr. Ismail Ak himself.

Many people then began to wonder -- "Well, what type of Asian? Could this mean Middle Eastern? Is this the media's way of hiding this fact?" Though a bit of a stretch...

Not a stretch at all. Sulejman Talovic was identified as an "Asian" in the press before his identity was known. And the BBC has been using the "Asian" shield to cover for Muslim perps since the WOT begin.

Now, hours later, we learn the name, we see his picture, we realize more details of his life. The Islam factor now seems extremely unlikely ... though actual proof may come about later.

That's one area where we differ. While it's not the slam dunk it would have been if it were a swarthy-looking ME named Mohammed Jihadi, no name or picture makes any perp "extremely unlikely" for such an attack. Jose Padilla, John Walker Lindh, Richard Reid and Christopher Paul aren't exactly typical names for Islamist operatives, either. The fact that this guy was South Korean means very little. Islam happens to be the fastest growing religion in South Korea (and America, where he's lived for 14 years). And terror groups have been actively recruiting non-ME Muslims for operations in America and the UK for years.

Suddenly, a reference on his arm to "Ismail Ax" (sp?) means that he was making an Islamic reference.

It was written on his arm because it was intended to be a message to the world he was leaving behind. So what did it mean? There's no reason to be incurious about it, it's a question worth asking. And attempting to answer the question doesn't necessarily mean anyone is saying anything is absolutely true. I've seen a number of people on this thread suggest it was a reference to "Moby Dick", none of them were ridiculed. Yet the people who suggest its origin is Islamic are called paranoid, conspiracy nuts and the usual nonsense. I can't figure out why that is. Everybody should be interested in finding out what the message was. And no ideas should be taken off the table. Ismail is a central figure in Islam. Second only to Allah himself. That doesn't mean that was absolutely the killer's intended message, but it's certainly worth exploring given what's going on in the world right now. We'd be foolish to dismiss it out of hand.

...rather than seeing the "in-your-face" evidence that there was undoubtedly something else wrong with the guy -- as can be seen in the play he wrote -- is just plain ludicrous.

Islam preys upon lost souls... people with things wrong with them. Normal, well-balanced, healthy and loving people don't covert to Islam. Warped, lost, damaged, demented people do. Like Scientology. The fact that there's evidence of things wrong with him doesn't diminish the possibility that he might be a Muslim convert one iota.

And "Ismail" isn't the crux of any argument of religious motivation. It's merely one sign of possible Islamic influence. If you have other ideas as to what the "Ismail" reference meant, feel free to share them. That's what forums like this are for.

I think that’s the scary thing. Even when you know there is a crazy guy around, how do you protect yourself?

Maybe there is a system where you can alert the police to someone acting threateningly, and then maybe gun shops can send in who has purchased guns. A computer program could track to tell the police that the threatening person has purchased guns/ammo, and then the police can keep an eye on him.

I’m okay with regular people having guns, but I do think that it needs to be tracked some way. I don’t think illegals and people with criminal records should be able to purchase guns.

I think you are right on this. That would be the most likely explanation.

Even crazy people go with what they are immersed in and know. Good call.

Yep. IF what is now being reported is true, it seems strange to me that they didn’t look for the guy IN HIS ROOM.

Now THAT would be a major screw up in my opinion and changes the dynamics of the entire response and I’ll have to completely change my position on the official decision-making team.

Good post. And if it’s not terrorists, its illegals. Only thing better: illegal terrorists. I used to laugh at the hysteria coming from the “other team.” Now I’m forced to just laugh at hysteria. It’s sad really.

No, gun shops already report sales. Laws won’t protect you from a crazy psychopath. I took out a restraining order against the kid who was stalking me and after the police informed him, he came and stood in the street in front of my house and called to me, challenging me to do something about it. So, I once again called the police. We eventually just moved, while he was in jail for being caught in a woman’s bedroom one night. But he found us again. The best defence for your home is a dog.

But stopping something like happened yesterday is difficult if authorities won’t take the danger signs seriously. Setting a fire in the dorm should have been enough to send the kid to jail. Professionals should be able to spot these people right away. My husband warned us that there was something off about the kid who stalked us, the first day he saw him. He used to teach special ed and then he was a staffing manager for a large company for years, where he had to be able to make judgement calls about people all the time.

Among antidepressants, Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) were 72.8%.

I seem to see a new one of those advertised on TV all the time. You have to wonder about an antidpressant that "may increase thoughts of suicide".

You can bet there are alot of people who have a vested interest in turning this mass killing away from Islam. They may be right, but the truth is not their motivation. Remember the clinton years and their excuses?

I haven't seen the arm, so I don't know.

However, it's not uncommon to misread letters. None of my searches for "Ismail Ax" turned up anything convincing. So, I tried "Ismail Ak" and voila. Don't know what it means. Weird coincidence?!

Very weird coincidence I think. Unless the perp traveled to Turkey. On some other thread a picture taken in Indonesia shows a smiling fellow with a name almost identical to Cho’s. Could be our perp traveled to some muslim countries recently. Seems a long way to go to see a shrink.

Given the overwhelming precedents set by past mass shootings in the US, the logical first question would be -- "I wonder what sent the nutjob over the edge?"

Maybe, if you work for the FBI's behavioral sciences unit, but not for any regular person. One of the more irritating aspects of these cases is the widespread psychoanalyses and mass amateur profiling that inevitably accompany them. And moreover, it's futile. Have we ever figured out what sent Harris and Klebold over the edge? How about Charles Roberts? Or Charles Whitman, for that matter.

Is it really that much more important to ask mostly unanswerable questions about suspects we'll never know rather than determine whether or not our country is being attacked? I don't think so. Once we know for sure that the situation is indeed an isolated incident, then we can go about the business of figuring out the hows and the whys. But as long as we're at war -- with an enemy that promises to carry out these kinds of attacks, specifically -- I can't fathom what the objection would be to keeping that thought at the forefront of your mind until the dust settles. Unless the case is an obvious one (like the Nickel Mines atrocity), there's absolutely nothing wrong with automatically assuming any act of large-scale violence and bloodshed is an act of Islam until proven otherwise. They've earned that prejudice.
