I myself fall into the "armed and prepared" camp..

Virginia Tech, like most universities around the country, forbids students from having guns on campus.

But that didn't prevent a wacko from having and using a gun on campus.
It only gave the rule-breaker an advantage over those who complied.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The deadly shooting rampage at Virginia Tech on Monday has reignited an emotional debate about whether students should be allowed to carry concealed weapons on campus.”

#

OPINION: There should be no debate on this issue. There should be no emotions involved. Common sense should prevail.

The question that should be asked is this, “Should law-abiding, adult American citizens (who have no mental health restrictions) be allowed to legally carry concealed weapons?”

All those with common sense will answer, “Yes.”

All those who are stuck on stupid will answer, “No.”

Anyone who states that they are undecided (for whatever reason) needs to take a quick course in common sense 101.

Requiring that everyone be armed would seem to be too drastic to some people.
Just like NO GUNS sounds to me.
No Guns means only law abiding citizens will be unarmed. The lawbreaking PERP knows he is shooting fish in a barrel

Just a thought...

Every student, faculty, and staff member must pay a fee to cover the cost of extra armed security officers for every university building. The fee is waived for those who can provide proof that they hold a concealed carry permit.

I almost got killed in college by a ‘roidhead wrestler armed with a Glock. Even after he discharged a firearm in a dorm at least twice, with an illegal unregistered firearm, in the state of NJ. Because he was the star wrestler at the college, the cops didn’t even take statements.

While I generally support concealed carry, I can’t support CCW on university campuses.

Big universities have way too many young men with way too little common sense and way too much machismo and alcohol/drugs to not have increased shootings.

Also, you have at almost every large university a self sustaining drug culture and drug trade, which would in some cases start a arms race between competing factions of dealers.

In the long term, even more cash strapped students would be drawn into the illicit gun trade, the black market opportunities create profit margins worth the risk.

That would just be politically incorrect.

This all hinges on the meaning of “student”. First consider the conditions that must be met to have a CCW. So, not every person who is enrolled as a student is even in the group of adult, qualified, licensed, CCW holders. But secondly and just as importantly, “students” also includes people who have just gotten out of serving in the military. One of my classmates was in the Army Special Forces. Another was on a SR71 groundcrew.

But we shouldn’t even be getting this far, because when we have to defend a right in this manner, we have already allowed the person attempting to do away with it to define the terms. He who defines the terms controls the discussion.

We don’t defend the free speech component of the First Amendment on campus by saying that some people who used to be newspaper reporters, commentators or activists may need to exercise that right. And we shouldn’t have to defend the Second Amendment like this either.

We allow universities to regulate speech, which most frequently means they allow all manner of leftist rantings including public sexual festivals, while doing what they can to suppress speech from conservatives. But we cannot allow universities to regulate free speech in a manner that forbids it. We have allowed the RKBA to be regulated away. And that is wrong.

Should students be allowed to carry concealed weapons?

Attaining the age of majority, and with proper training under their belts, why not?

The same aged people are in Iraq, using military weaponry on our behalf.

No reason they can't use arms on their own behalf as guaranteed by the 2nd amendment.

If highly trained secret service officers accidentally shoot each other, a campus full of kids with guns would be ridiculous:

Secret service officer shoots two agents at White House

Two Secret Service officers were injured after a gun held by another Secret Service officer accidentally fired inside the White House gate, according to a spokesman, Darrin Blackford.

Their injuries are non-life threatening, the spokesman said.

One officer suffered a shrapnel wound to the face, and the other was wounded in the leg.

They were taken to George Washington Hospital.

At the time, President George W Bush was on a trip to Blacksburg, Virginia, to attend a ceremony at Virginia Tech university following yesterday’s shooting rampage.

“It appears that at approximately 2.10pm (0410 AEST) there was an accidental discharge of a service issued weapon, which occurred inside the Southwest Gate at a security post near the White House,” Blackford said.

Perhaps it’s time to train and arm teachers instead of kids

The easy answer is yes. With the proper qualifications etc..

Then again, I think all able body men 18-45 should be armed. Then again, what do I know about Title 11 U.S.C.?

When I took my son to his first year of college in Sioux Falls, SD he wanted to hunt pheasants and brought his shotgun along. When I asked the RA in the dorm where he should check in his shotgun he said, “just keep it in his room”. That was 11 years ago, those were the days.

Should students be allowed? Who cares about what is allowed? If you enjoy life and don't want to die, carry anyway, whether they allow you to or not. There are times when I do.

Yes. Responsible Americans over 18 should be allowed to carry firearms.

That is if the official goal is to save innocent lives. If not, just lie down and die like a dog and thank a liberal politician for the privilege.

Someone should sue VT for disarming the Campus and not allowing a response to the killer.

Oh boy. I’ve already been thru this with the original breaking-news thread, and elsewhere, but here we go again.

Seems like it’s either all or nothing. I myself advocate a middle ground. And caught hell for it - and ready to do it again!

I’ll probably be replying by referring to the posts I already made so I don’t have to type all over again.
