WASHINGTON - The White House said on Wednesday that President Bush still had full confidence in World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz, who faces a storm of criticism for helping arrange a high-paying promotion for his girlfriend.
We still have full confidence, the president has full confidence in President Wolfowitz, White House spokesman Tony Fratto told reporters.
Wolfowitz, a key Iraq war architect who left the Pentagon in 2005 to become president of the World Bank, played a role in dictating the terms that his girlfriend, bank employee Shaha Riza, would be offered to take an outside assignment.

why is bush’s confidence in wolfie ‘one-sided crap’? Are you a leftist?
I’m for giving Wolfowitz a break. Read the articles on opinionjournal.com.
No you misunderstood leadpencill.
He is infuriated by the leftist media bias in the article, which suggests Wolfowitz’ “fault” as if it were fact.
The link leadpencill provided shows the real story. Wolfowitz is being targetted for his Iraq role.
These overpaid money spreaders are mad because he is trying to clean up some of the corruption at the World Bank. They like being judged for how much money they give out, not how much actually alleviates poverty.
Sounds like PETA, which doesn't actually spend money helping living animals, they just lobby about it.
Why is Bush commenting on this? Someone ducktape his lips shut.
Wolfie isn’t even part of this administration. No good can come of this.
One thing that is sort of exculpatory between Paul and his girl is that the board shoved it on him to dictate the girl’s contract. He had qualms but said yes. Then he gave her a really big salary hike and promotion plus promises of multiple promotions after five years, all bigger than he should have. It’s a given that he is selfserving, but he may have been protective, too. The backstory to this is that maybe the board would have punished Riza severely for her association with Paul if Paul hadn’t written her up something nice for her pay packet. If they hated him they surely hated her even more as some sort of class traitor. Food for thought. Maybe this was about protecting her rather than taking care of her.
Correct! and very well said.
