Bruning may yet take on Hagel in '08

LINCOLN - Attorney General Jon Bruning has changed his mind. He now is considering challenging fellow Republican Chuck Hagel in Nebraska's U.S. Senate primary next year.

Bruning said Wednesday he is upset with Hagel's criticism of President Bush and the Iraq war.

And, he said, his decision whether to run for the Senate no longer depends on whether Hagel decides to seek a third term.

Bruning, who is exploring a Senate bid, said last month that he would not run against Hagel in the primary.

Hagel has not disclosed his plans. He said in March that he would decide later this year whether to run for re-election or president, or to get out of politics.

Mike Buttry, Hagel's spokesman, said the senator would not let Bruning's comments influence his decision about his political future.

"Chuck Hagel's political future will be determined - if he decides to run for re-election - by the people of Nebraska. It will not be determined by Jon Bruning," Buttry said.

Bruning said he will decide by the end of the year whether to run. He said he is being encouraged to challenge Hagel in the primary by Republicans who are angered by Hagel's stance on the Iraq war.

Good!

The time to bring in real republicans into the mix is during primaries. Once the primaries are over we may be stuck with voting for a RINO. A RINO is still better than a liberal or democrat, but in the case of Hagel, I'm not too sure. He's been more on the liberals' side than on the republicans'. A RINO is only good for control by republicans of senate committees and setting the agenda.

"That means he [Hagel] could expect support from the National Republican Senatorial Committee."

Of course. Hagel, Chaffee, Specter, etc., (snakes) are the ONLY kind of candidates the NRSC is interested in getting re-elected.
