Mayor Giuliani yesterday said he would find it hard to back any Republican presidential candidate who favors repealing the federal assault-weapons ban, further distancing himself from GOP front-runner Robert Dole.
"There should be very, very few litmus tests, but someone who now voted to roll back the assault-weapons ban would really be demonstrating that special interest politics mean more to them than life-or-death issues," said Giuliani, who irked GOP leaders by appearing with President Clinton to support the gun legislation.
Giuliani said he would consider candidates' overall presidential platforms, but he said their position on the ban "should bear very, very heavily."
Dole (R-Kan.) has promised the National Rifle Association he will work for a repeal. House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) wants a vote on the issue this month. Giuliani is the only major New York Republican not backing Dole's White House bid.
Among GOP presidential hopefuls, only Indiana Sen. Richard Lugar opposes a repeal of the ban on assault weapons.
Giuliani dismissed questions about whether he would cross party lines and back Clinton. Giuliani still bears political scars for backing Democratic Gov. Mario Cuomo's failed reelection bid last year.

Okay.
Wow. All this talk about how we shouldn't have a litmus test from Rudy supporters...and Rudy has his own!

Oy vey.
Rudy ping.
Apparently, Rudy won’t endorse people who support overturning the assault weapons ban.
Hmm.
What a sick little, limp wristed liberal.
Somehow, I don’t think Areafiftyone want to be on this PING list.
Man I hate those single issue voters!
Nah, he'th a thilly little thavage!
LOL. We’re supposed to ignore the 30 “single issues” that Rudy is a far leftist on, yet he can’t support someone who is pro 2A
It’s not a ping list. I ping lots of people at once.
It varies from time to time, depending on (A) how many people I think of off the top of my head and (B) how lazy I am.
That it should--and does. I won't vote for you, Rudy.
About this issue; without the right to own firearms, no other issues matter - because the Dems and Libs will run roughshod over them.
Rudy doesn’t have to cross party lines.
Does there exist any picture of Rudy doing something manly or playing sports or mowing a lawn? The only non-suited picture of him (besides in drag) was his “undercover” pic with Al D’mato, where he had Fred Mertz pants on.
I think there’s a picture of him in a Yankees uniform.
Can he throw it from the mound to homeplate?
I have this one of Rudy as an NBA Basketball star:
1995. 1995? Know how many times I’ve changed my mind since 1995? Can’t we keep the subject a little closer to today?
Ne w York City Republican = Ahnuld Republican = RINO = Imus = ....
Hillary
No. His record as mayor is all he runs on. His liberalsim needs to be exposed. And he hasn’t changed his mind, he’s lying thru his teeth and tapdancing now.
His record as mayor is what he’s running on. It’s fair game.
And his positions haven’t changed. At least, not until this election cycle (where all of a sudden he says he understands the 2nd Amendment and that what works in New York doesn’t work elsewhere...even though the AWB was NATIONWIDE).
